River Hawks Fight to 1-1 Draw Against UAlbany in Regular-Season Finale

ALBANY, N.Y. –  Junior Ethan Young (Kansas City, Mo.) scored his first goal as a River Hawk, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (7-6-3, 2-3-2 AE) fought to a 1-1 draw against the UAlbany Great Danes (5-6-5, 3-2-2 AE) in the regular-season finale.

"It's been a great season and a step forward for the program," said Head Coach Kyle Zenoni. "Everyone should be proud of getting into the postseason and we have been in every game. Tonight, we made a mistake in the back and they punished us for it. We regrouped a bit at halftime and got a great goal, and I felt we should have had more. We will see how Saturday goes, it will be a battle."

Young, whose goal came late in the second half, led the River Hawks with three shots and two shots on goal. Jean Leonardo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Matteo Costa (Frankfurt am Main, Germany) each tallied an assist on the goal, marking the first assists of the year for both. Senior Oliver Holmstrom (Gävle, Sweden) added two shots, while graduate student Jorge Ortega (Tijuana, B.C., Mexico) and freshman Alvaro Medrano (Guatemala City, Guatemala) each played 45 minutes in net.

The River Hawks came out strong on the defensive end, not allowing a shot for over seven minutes of action. The Great Danes, however, found their stride on the offensive end, rattling off four shots in a row by the 13th minute. The UMass Lowell defense held strong, not allowing a shot on goal for the next 25 minutes, but in the 40th minute, the hosts struck, taking a 1-0 lead into the break.

Coming out of the break, the Great Danes registered the first shot of the period just under two minutes in. The River Hawks, however, stood tall defensively, allowing only two more shots over the next 30 minutes of action, both of which were saved. Meanwhile, on the offensive end, the visitors began to take control, starting with a shot by Young in the 70th minute that was sent just to the left of the net.

Still controlling possession, UMass Lowell ripped another shot, this time off the foot of Holmstrom, in the 73rd minute, but once again it just missed the target. Despite a shot by UAlbany moments later, the River Hawks found their strongest opportunity of the night and were sure not to waste it. Collecting the ball near midfield, Costa raced down the sidelines before sending a high pass into the box for Leonardo, who headed the ball directly to Young. Wide open on the right side of the box, Young settled the ball before unleashing a shot right of the keeper and into the back of the net, tying the game up at 1-1 in the 79th minute.

In the final minutes of action, both teams looked for a chance to jump in front, with Young putting another shot on target in the 88th minute, but neither side was able to capitalize, sealing the 1-1 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks will once again face UAlbany, this time in the America East Quarterfinals on Saturday, November 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bob Ford Field in Albany, New York.
