LOWELL, Mass. — With four River Hawks finishing in double figures, the UMass Lowell women's basketball team (3–4) turned in a complete effort on Sunday afternoon, powering past Maine Fort Kent (5–2), 82–36, at the Kennedy Family Athletic Complex.
"It's always good to get a win back," commented head coach Jon Plefka. "Especially at home. That group at the end of the first and into the second really blew the lead out. Some players got big minutes and opportunities that will help us Wednesday against Iona and throughout the season. It was a great win overall, and now we'll clean some things up in practice and use this to propel us forward."
Senior guard Jaini Edmonds (Worcester, Mass.) paced the offense with 18 points, adding five rebounds, two assists, and three steals, while junior guard Paris Gilmore (Youngstown, Ohio) contributed 14 points, five assists, and four steals to spark the transition game. Sophomore forward Klimentina Modeva (Ohrid, North Macedonia) delivered a commanding presence off the bench with her first double-double, totaling 13 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. Sophomore forward Adna Halilbasic (Recklinghausen, Germany) added 10 points, including two makes from deep, to round out the balanced scoring.
UMass Lowell set the tone immediately, jumping out to an 8–0 start behind threes from Edmonds and senior guard Sabrina Larsson (Uppsala, Sweden) and a series of early second-chance boards. The River Hawks kept the pressure on throughout the first quarter, stretching the lead to 19–9 with a pair of transition buckets and strong defensive stops.
The second quarter broke the game open. UMass Lowell strung together a 17–2 run highlighted by Edmonds pushing the pace, Gilmore jumping passing lanes, and Modeva cleaning up the offensive glass. Graduate forward Anabel Latorre Ciria (Zaragoza, Spain) added steady scoring inside as the River Hawks built a 46–18 halftime advantage.
The momentum carried into the third. Modeva opened the frame with a finish inside before Gilmore knocked down a three and Larsson scored through contact to extend the margin. Halilbasic added a pair of timely threes, and the River Hawks continued to generate stops that limited UMFK to eight points in the period. UMass Lowell led by as many as 47 in the fourth and saw eight different players score in the win.
The River Hawks now shift their focus to the road, traveling to Iona on Wednesday, Dec. 3 for a 7 p.m. matchup.
