River Hawks Outlast UAlbany, 73-69, in America East Opener

ALBANY, N.Y. – Fifth year Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tallied 16 points and nine rebounds, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (12-4,1-0 AE) edged out the UAlbany Great Danes (8-8, 0-1 AE), 73-69, on Saturday afternoon.
Tied at 62-62 with five minutes to play, the hosts sank two free throws to take their first lead since early in the second half. The River Hawks, however, refused to back down, as fifth year Yuri Covington (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) drilled a triple to put his team back up by one. Although the Great Danes responded with a trey of their own, UMass Lowell used a layup from fifth year Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) and a breakaway dunk by senior Cam Morris III (Alexander City, Ala.) to own a 69-67 advantage with 2:47 to go. A basket by the opposition once again evened the score, but the team locked down on defense, not allowing a point the rest of the way, setting up Mincey for the game-winning basket with 29 seconds remaining followed by senior Quincy Clark (Columbus, Ohio) sealing the decision with free throws in the final seconds.
"Great road win tonight to start conference play against a tough and physical UAlbany team," said head coach Pat Duquette. "We played through some shooting woes and just stayed the course and it fell back to us at the end."
Mincey, who was tied for the team-high in points and led his squad in boards, also posted a game-best four assists. Adding 16 points as well, Brooks was all over the box score with eight rebounds, four blocks, and an assist. Rounding out the double-digit scorers, Covington and Clark each chipped in with 10 points apiece. The River Hawks didn't let pressure get to them, outlasting 11 stalemates and 14 lead changes to clinch the road victory.
The River Hawks started the game strong on both ends of the court, using a jumper from Clark and four points from Brooks to own a 6-0 advantage just over two minutes in. The Great Danes fired right back, though, putting together a quick 5-0 burst. Clark sank two free throws to interrupt the stretch before four more from the hosts gave them a 9-8 edge at the 14:20 mark. Both squads continued to go back and forth over the next four minutes, setting up a one-point advantage for UMass Lowell, 16-15, midway through the first half.
Each side began to heat up on offense, with senior Xzavier Lino (Phoenix, Ariz.) leading the way for his team, posting six straight points to help keep it a one-point game. Despite the Great Danes scoring two quick layups to jump in front, freshman Martin Somerville (Bowie, Md.) converted on both ends of a hard-fought and-1 to ignite a 9-4 run, giving UMass Lowell a 31-29 lead with just over three minutes to play. UAlbany responded, scoring eight of the game's next ten to own a 37-33 lead at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the River Hawks found their rhythm from beyond the arc, as Morris III and Covington each drilled a shot from deep as part of an 8-4 run, knotting the game up at 41-41 with 16:55 remaining. After a basket by the hosts put the visitors behind by two, the River Hawks erupted, scoring eight points in under two minutes to regain the lead, 49-43, their largest since the opening minutes. The back-and-forth battle continued for the next five minutes, and although Somerville made his first triple of the night to keep his team in front by two possessions with eight minutes remaining, UAlbany used a slight 4-0 edge over the next three minutes, setting up the tight finish.
Next up, the River Hawks prep for a rematch of last year's America East Championship when they host the Vermont Catamounts on Thursday, January 9. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Costello Athletic Center.
