LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore
Abbey Lindsey (Staten Island, N.Y.) totaled 20 points, as UMass Lowell (2-15, 0-5 AE) fell, 64-43, to Bryant (9-9, 2-3 AE) at Costello Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon in America East Conference play.
"We talk to our team a lot about how in conference play the margin of error is super small and I think we saw that at the end of the first half," said Head Coach
Denise King. "Basketball is a game of runs. In the second half, when things go wrong, I would like to see more fight."
Lindsey guided the River Hawks and tied her season record in points in the outing. She went 6-6 from the foul line, while also collecting four rebounds. As a team, UMass Lowell outshot Bryant from the line, 80.0% to 62.5%.
Lindsey recorded eight points in the first quarter, notching her first points in baseline-to-baseline fashion, collecting the board and racing to the hoop for a layup. The River Hawks' largest lead of the quarter would come from a six-point run, putting themselves ahead, 12-7, at 1:59. The Bulldogs finished up the quarter with an eight-point stretch, though, sinking two, three-pointers with less than a minute left to take the lead, 15-12.
UMass Lowell and Bryant would trade nine-point runs in the second quarter. Redshirt-senior
Sydney Watkins (Indianapolis, Ind.) got the spurt started at 3:59 with a fastbreak pull-up jumper, followed by a big three from senior
Amina Kameric (Seattle, Wash.) to chip away at the Bulldogs' lead. Bryant would conclude the half with five points, leading 31-25 going into the break.
Watkins and Rice started the second half with back-to-back layups, but Bryant tallied its largest run of the game during the third quarter, as the team went on a 12-point stretch. The River Hawks and Bulldogs would head into the final quarter with a score of 49-32 with Bryant in front.
The River Hawks grabbed the first points of the fourth quarter at 8:09, as Lindsey used the entire shot clock to knock down a jump shot at the buzzer. Bryant then put together a string of nine unanswered, hitting two threes in a row, increasing its lead to 60-38 at 4:07. Lindsey would help the River Hawks to the final points of the game with a successful jumper, despite falling to the Bulldogs, 64-43.
The River Hawks will hit the road for a two-game America East road swing, first at Maine on Thursday, January 23 with a tipoff set for 6 p.m.
