River Hawks Start America East Play, Hosting UMBC

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (1-6-2) begins America East conference play at Cushing Field on Sunday, September 29 versus UMBC (4-4-1, 0-0-1) with a 1 p.m. kickoff. The River Hawks will hold Prospect Weekend and will dedicate the contest to the league's Spread Respect initiative.

Looking at UMass Lowell
The River Hawks' last contest was home versus Dartmouth, resulting in a 2-1 setback. This was UMass Lowell's final non-conference match of the season. Graduate student Calliste Brookshire (Mendon, Mass.) recorded her first goal of the season created from a free kick. Brookshire tallied three shots, with sophomore Luka Marceau (Newton, Mass.) following with two of her own. The River Hawks facilitated the ball well, especially in the first half.   
 
Scouting the Retrievers
UMBC has one conference game under its belt. Last week the Retrievers had two contests, with the first being a 2-1 win against Mount St. Mary's (Md.) and then a 0-0 draw versus America East opponent, UAlbany.

In the Mount St. Mary's (Md.) contest, goals were scored by UMBC's Natasha Munro and Maddie Schepers. The Retrievers took 26 total shots, with eight being on target to the Mountaineer's nine total shots. Payton Schenning led the team with six shots on the day, Misa Kasparcova followed with five, and Schepers earned four. Abbey Cowles recieved the start in net, allowing no goals. Goalkeeper Sara Gavagan got the nod for the second half, making four saves.

In UMBC's first conference contest versus UAlbany, no goals were scored by either team. The Retrievers took numerous shots in the match as well, totaling 22 with nine on target. The Great Danes were only able to get off five shots, with none on goal. Cowles and Gavagan split the contest again, with no saves to be made.
UMBC has eight different goal scorers so far this season, each earning a goal apiece. Munro and Schenning lead the program with four points each.

The River Hawks are 8-2-1 overall against the Retrievers.
 
Leading the Flock
Freshman Gaby Eckroth (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) is the offensive threat for the River Hawks with four points on two goals. Brookshire cracked into the scoring bracket last contest to now trail Eckroth with three points, produced by a goal and an assist, along with leading the squad with 13 shots. Senior Laura Cetina (A Coruña, Galicia, Spain) has earned two points this season, with 11 total shots.
 
Between the Sticks
Graduate student Taylor Burgess (Mendon, Mass.) has received eight starts in net so far this season, with one shutout victory. This River Hawk keeper has made 53 saves to average a .803 save percentage and 1.73 goals against average.
 
Around the America East
UMass Lowell is in first for shot accuracy at .482 percent in the America East. The River Hawks hold second place for save percentage (.816) and second in saves per game (6.89).

Burgess is second for save percentage at .803, second for saves per game averaging 6.63, and second for total saves with 53 on the season.
