River Hawks Fall to Dartmouth, 2-1

LOWELL, Mass. – Graduate student Calliste Brookshire (Kingston, Mass.) recorded her first goal of the season, as UMass Lowell (1-6-2) fell, 2-1, to Dartmouth (6-2-1) at Cushing Field on Saturday afternoon.

"I'm glad we finally scored, it was a good set piece," said Head Coach Mira Novak. "I think we made it hard for the goalkeeper to deal with that ball. It was well executed, but unfortunately, we didn't score more. A lot of half-chances and situations around the box that we could have gotten a little bit more out of, but we didn't take advantage of them. Unfortunate, but happy for Cal that she finally scored one."

Dartmouth totaled 14 shots to UMass Lowell's nine, with Brookshire leading the pack with three shots and sophomore Luka Marceau (Newton, Mass.) trailing behind with two.

On the other end of the field, graduate student Taylor Burgess (Mendon, Mass.) made five saves in net.

The match started at a quick pace, with UMass Lowell earning a corner kick in the seventh minute, taken by Brookshire. She sailed in a great pass, but the River Hawks were unable to capitalize.

Junior Maddie Guthrie (Stow, Mass.) made a huge defensive stop in the 11th minute, stealing the ball back after a turnover, as she was the only one who stood between Burgess and the net.

Brookshire threatened once again in the 12th minute, putting a sharp curve on the ball, but it was picked up by Dartmouth's keeper.

Dartmouth took the lead in the 28th minute, as Danielle Burke passed the ball up field for Hannah Curtin to grab it and find the bottom left corner of the net, just out of reach of Burgess.

In the 41st minute, Ellie Davidson took the throw in for the Big Green, giving Dasa Hase enough room to turn and collect the ball before firing in the second goal for Dartmouth to make it 2-0.

After the break in the 56th minute, Brookshire soared the ball into the box generated by a corner kick for UMass Lowell. Junior Nadja Andersen (Nakskov, Denmark) then flew into the box, ripping a shot that was saved by the Dartmouth keeper. Marceau received the rebound and followed up with another shot that was blocked by the Big Green.

In the 69th minute, Marceau was back for another chance, settling the ball to then launch a shot that ended up being just right of the post.

Brookshire recorded the River Hawks' goal in the 82nd minute off of a free kick, hitting the back left corner of the net.

Despite a beautiful goal by Brookshire, it was not enough to lift the River Hawks past the Big Green, as the contest ended, 2-1.

The River Hawks celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month during the day and welcomed alumni back to Cushing.

This marks UMass Lowell's final non-conference match of the season. Up next, UMass Lowell will face America East opponent UMBC at Cushing Field with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. on September 29.
