River Hawks Set to Host Stony Brook, Visit Massachusetts

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (1-3-2) is slated for a pair of contests this week, first facing off against the Seawolves of Stony Brook (2-2-1) on Thursday, September 12 at home on Cushing Field at 5 p.m. before hitting the road for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Rudd Field against the Minutewomen of Massachusetts (4-2-1) on Sunday, September 15.

Looking at UMass Lowell
The River Hawks had one contest last week, traveling to Central Connecticut on Sunday to take on the Blue Devils, leaving with a draw, 1-1. Freshman Gaby Eckroth (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) led the pack with the lone River Hawk goal and three shots. UMass Lowell outshot CCSU, 12-10. Senior Laura Cetina (A Coruña, Galicia, Spain) was able to generate two shots on the day, totaling 11 shots so far this season, the most of the River Hawks.
 
Scouting the Seawolves
Stony Brook faced Yale on Sunday of last week, but was sent back to Long Island with a 1-0 loss. The Seawolves took 11 shots to the Bulldogs' 13. Gabrielle Côté has three goals on the season with one assist, while also totaling ten shots to spearhead the Stony Brook offense. Luciana Setteducate follows with four points overall, one goal and two assists with eight shots. Nicolette Pasquarella has been the lone keeper in net for the Seawolves, making 18 saves this fall, averaging a .692 save percentage.
 
Stony Brook Matchup History
Thursday's contest will mark the 10th meeting between the River Hawks and Seawolves, as Stony Btook leads the all-time series, 6-3. The River Hawks have recorded nine goals throughout the outings. 

Scouting the Minutewomen
Massachusetts is on a three-game win streak, with two wins coming from the past week. On Thursday, the Minutewomen faced the Huskies of Northeastern, grabbing a 4-0 win. There were four different goal scorers for Massachusetts, including Bella Recinos, Chandler Pedolzky, Ella Curry and Ashley Lamond. The Minutewomen outshot Northeastern, 15-4. On Sunday, Massachusetts took down Bryant in a 3-0 win. Recinos and Lamond each totaled a goal in this match, as well, along with Grace Pinkus. The Minutewomen and the Bulldogs were even with 11 shots apiece. Recinos guides the Minutewomen offensively with nine points on the season, four goals and one assist. Pedolzky is short behind with seven points on two goals and three assists.

The River Hawks are 1-1-3 overall against the Minutewomen, totaling nine goals.
 
Leading the Flock
Eckroth pilots the River Hawks' offense with four points, produced by two goals. She earned her first career goal at Boston University on August 22, in the 1-0 UMass Lowell victory. Her most recent goal was an excellent finish on a cross from graduate student Calliste Brookshire (Kingston, Mass.) in the 1-1 tie at Central Connecticut State on September 8. Eckroth has nine shots recorded on the season, seeing the field for 253 minutes with two starts.

Cetina has proven to be a threat on offense with her 11 shots taken so far, totaling the lone goal versus Rhode Island on September 1. Her leadership and drive has earned her five starts, playing 347 minutes.
 
Between the Sticks
Graduate student Taylor Burgess (Mendon, Mass.) gained her fifth start in the match at CCSU. The River Hawk keeper has made 33 saves, averaging an .846 save percentage. Burgess continues to make top-notch saves, keeping all contests close for UMass Lowell.

Around the America East
UMass Lowell ranks first in the America East for shot accuracy at .534 percent. In the goalkeeper category, the River Hawks claim second for saves per game averaging 7.80, and second for save percentage, .841. Conference play is quickly approaching, as UMBC will visit Lowell on September 29.
 
The Kennedy Cup
Established in 2018, UMass Lowell and UMass Amherst battle throughout the year to be awarded the Kennedy Cup to the school with the most wins in the cumulative year. John Kennedy is a longtime supporter of the River Hawks and the Minutemen athletic programs. Kennedy holds degrees from both schools, Lowell Technological Institute ('70, H '16) and UMass Amherst ('76), with degrees in Mathematics (BS) and Accounting (MS), respectively. Kennedy also received an honorary degree from UMass Lowell in 2016.

This contest on September 15 between the UMass Lowell and UMass Amherst marks the six year of the cup.
