Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

River Hawks Fall to Massachusetts, 7-1

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Jonathan Ferreira (Ashland, Mass.) scored his first goal of the season, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (4-1-2) fell to the Massachusetts Minutemen (2-1-2), 7-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior Iñaki Esnaola (Junin, Argentina) led the team with four shots, including two on goal. Behind him, senior Shunnosuke Nakajima (Yokohama, Japan) added three shots, while five other River Hawks chipped in with two shots each. In net, junior JR Gawel (Leonardtown, Md.) made six saves.

The Minutemen opened the scoring early, finding the back of the net in the sixth minute, before striking twice more to make it a 3-0 game 15 minutes in. Despite the early deficit, the River Hawks refused to back down, pushing aggressively on the offensive end to fire off four of the next five shots, but a save and block by the defense kept it a three-goal game. UMass Lowell continued to attack the net, but Massachusetts capitalized on a penalty kick to add to their lead.

In the final minutes of the half, the River Hawks continued to fight. Although a shot by Ferreira was stopped by the opposition's keeper, the senior got another opportunity only two minutes later. Moving down the field, Ferreira sprinted into the box to settle a pass, but the opposing defender fouled him, setting him up with a penalty kick. He wasted no time, drilling his shot into the back of the net, cutting the lead to 4-1 heading into the break.

The River Hawks opened the second half by continuing their aggressive approach, recording five straight shots before the 60th minute, including two off the foot of Nakajima. The Minutemen, however, were able to fight off the advances by UMass Lowell, before adding two more to make it 6-1.

UMass Lowell continued to battle in the final 20 minutes, using shots from senior Santiago Delfino (Cordoba, Argentina) and freshman Cristiano Da Silva (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) to try and get back on the board, but were unable to convert, before a goal by Massachusetts sealed the 7-1 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks finish up their short road trip with a match at local rival Merrimack on Saturday, September 14. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Martone-Mejail Field.
