River Hawks Cruise to 3-0 Victory Over Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J.  –Junior Oliver Holmstrom (Gävle, Sweden) tallied a goal for the second straight game, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (2-0-1) earned a 3-0 victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks (0-2-1) on Thursday afternoon.

"I'm extremely proud of the guys," said head coach Kyle Zenoni. "Saint Peter's is a tough place to play and we knew it was going to be a battle. Everyone stepped up and did whatever the team and the game needed. We challenged ourselves to keep them scoreless and we did that. It's hard to win in college soccer and on the road, so we will enjoy it for the night and prepare for a very good Boston University team."

Holmstrom, whose goal proved to be the game-winning goal, was one of three River Hawks to score in the match. Classmate Oscar Perez (Sagunto, Spain) found the back of the net for the first time in his career, while fellow junior Calvin Scholten (Hengelo, Netherlands) added his first of the season. In net, junior JR Gawel (Leonardtown, Md.) played the entire 90 minutes, making three saves en route to his second straight shutout.

Although the Peacocks logged the first shot of the game just over two minutes in, the River Hawks quickly took control, firing off two shots of their own, but a save by the Saint Peter's goalie kept UMass Lowell at bay. However, the visitors continued the relentless offensive attack, and with 13:23 on the clock, their efforts were rewarded with the first goal of the match. After a shot by graduate student Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia) sailed over the hands of the diving keeper and clipped the crossbar , Holmstrom rushed in and connected on the loose ball with his head, tapping the ball in and giving the River Hawks a 1-0 advantage.

Looking to grow their lead, UMass Lowell continued dominating both ends of the field, as the defense prevented the opposition from finding a shot opportunity for the next 20 minutes of action. Meanwhile, the River Hawks put up four shots but couldn't convert to extend the lead. In the final minutes of the period, Saint Peter's began to push the ball down the field, but a diving save by Gawel kept it a one-goal game heading into the break.

The second half opened with a physical back-and-forth battle, as the two sides combined for only three shots by the 65th minute. The defensive clash didn't last much longer though, as UMass Lowell again began to find its rhythm on offense. After a foul by the Peacocks' defense positioned the River Hawks with a free kick just outside the box, Perez took advantage of the opportunity, launching a rocket past the keeper for the first time in his career to double his squad's lead.

In the 79th minute, the visitors capitalized to net their third and final goal. With an open look, Scholten unleashed his only shot of the game, lasering it past Saint Peter's defense for his first of the season, putting his team up 3-0. In the final ten minutes, the Peacocks tried to find a way to cut into the lead, but excellent defensive play sealed the victory and the second straight shutout for UMass Lowell.

Next
up, the River Hawks return home to take on the Boston University Terriers on Sunday, September 1. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Cushing Field.
