River Hawks Earn Series Win Against Binghamton on Friday

LOWELL, Mass. – Junior Trinadey Santiago (Cheshire, Conn.) and graduate student Brenna Davenport (Merrimack, N.H.) grabbed their first home run of the season, as the UMass Lowell softball team (14-26, 8-10 AE) earned a pair of wins against Binghamton (31-16, 13-6 AE) on Friday evening.

The River Hawks took a close, 5-4, decision in game one before earning an impressive 6-1 victory in game two.

Santiago totaled two hits, three RBI and a run on the afternoon. Davenport added two hits, two runs and three RBI, extending her hitting streak to 12 games. Sophomore Katelyn Fitzgerald (Ambler, Pa.) and senior Morgan Fisher (Glassboro, N.J.) batted 4-for-7 (.571), with Fisher adding four RBI to her stat line. Senior Lea White (Meriden, Conn.) collected a hit and three runs scored, while graduate student Cayla Tulley (Corona, Calif.) grabbed two hits, an RBI and a run scored, respectively.

Graduate student Ryley White (Wareham, Mass.) started in the circle for game one, throwing a complete game victory with six strikeouts. Sophomore Giana LaCedra (Tyngsboro, Mass.) took the decision in game two, pitching all 7.0 innings with three hits allowed and six strikeouts to earn her second win of the season.

L. White hit a leadoff single to left field to open game one, advancing to second after Davenport laid down a sacrifice bunt. Fisher then stepped up and sent a single to center field, giving L. White a chance to score the game's opening run. However, Binghamton's Bella Farina would make a throw to the catcher, who recorded tag out at home plate to keep the game scoreless.

In Binghamton's first at-bat, pitcher Allison L'Amoreaux delivered a solo home run to center field to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage after the first.

The River Hawks answered in the top of the second, starting with senior Elizabeth Frederick (Sunapee, N.H.) drawing a walk, followed by an infield single from Fitzgerald. After junior Emily Tow (North Kingstown, R.I.) sent a sacrifice fly to left field to advance Frederick to third, Santiago stepped up and crushed a home run that hit the top of the left field scoreboard to give UMass Lowell a 3-1 lead.

After a scoreless third and fourth inning, UMass Lowell built on its lead in the top of the fifth. L. White earned a walk, before Davenport sent a double to left field to put runners on second and third. Up stepped Fisher, who hit a double of her own to the left-center gap, scoring both runners and extending the advantage to 5-1.

Binghamton answered in the bottom half of the fifth, though, as Brianna Santos grabbed a double to right field, followed by a RBI triple from Lindsey Walter to cut the deficit to 5-2. L'Amoreaux added another with an RBI double to right field to make it 5-3. The Bearcats then loaded the bases after earning back-to-back walks, but were unable to plate any runs after recording a pop out to third.

Binghamton collected another RBI triple to cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth, and attempted to even the score in its final at-bat. However, the River Hawks held on, recording three straight groundouts to take the victory in game one.

Game two began with the River Hawks loading the bases after Davenport, Fisher and Santiago all drew walks. However, Binghamton escaped the inning without surrendering a run, recording a strikeout to close the scoring opportunity.

The Bearcats threatened to take the lead with their first at-bat, collecting a leadoff double to the right-center gap. Emma Lawson scored the runner after a throwing error advanced the runners, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

L. White earned a leadoff walk to start the top of the third, and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from Davenport. With a runner in scoring position, Fisher delivered another RBI hit, sending a single up the middle, allowing L. White to cross home plate and even the score at 1-1.

Binghamton attempted to reclaim the lead in the bottom half of the third, grabbing a walk and a single to put multiple runners on. LaCedra and the River Hawk defense held on, recording two routine flyouts to close the third with the game tied.

L. White earned another leadoff walk in the top of the fifth before Davenport hit an infield single to put runners on first and second. Up stepped Fisher, who collected her second RBI single of the game to give the River Hawks a 2-1 lead. The visitors had an opportunity to extend the lead with runners on second and third, but the Bearcats extinguished the chance, leaving the inning with a one-run deficit.

LaCedra continued to limit the Binghamton offense, allowing just three hits and collecting four strikeouts through the five-inning stretch.

UMass Lowell extended the buffer in the top of the sixth when Tulley hit a double to deep right field to score sophomore Shannon Howes (Palgrave, Ontario) to make it 3-1. L. White then reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, before Davenport stepped up and launched a three-run home run to left field to extend the lead to 6-1.

LaCedra and the River Hawks recorded two hitless innings to help seal the 6-1 victory in game two.

UMass Lowell looks to close the series against Binghamton with a sweep tomorrow, May 4, with the first pitch taking place at 1 p.m.
