River Hawks Host Northeastern, Marist to Close Regular Season

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (22-27, 11-12 AE) will wrap up regular season action this week as they welcome the Northeastern Huskies (34-15, 15-9 CAA) to LeLacheur Park on Tuesday afternoon before hosting Marist (17-32, 10-14 MAAC) in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

LAST TIME OUT
UMass Lowell went 1-3 last week, dropping a midweek road game at Massachusetts before falling 2-1 to NJIT in an America East weekend series. The River Hawks tied the series with an 8-1 win on Saturday afternoon and saw a late rally halted by the Highlanders in Sunday's series finale. Carlos Martinez continues to impress at the plate with a team-high .338 batting average, good for fourth in the league. River Hart made two starts against NJIT and came up with two highlight reel catches in left field as well as several big hits at the plate. Sean O'Leary returned the to the lineup and belted two homers in Sunday's game to give him four on the season.
 
Zach Fortuna continued to do what he's done all season and gave the River Hawks a chance to mount a comeback on Sunday, going 3.1 innings with just one earned run to keep his season ERA at 0.70. Dylan Bedder made his return to the mound after missing nearly two months with an injury and threw a flawless inning with two strikeouts in Saturday's win.
 
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Northeastern has lost four of its last seven games, but the Huskies have had a fantastic year with a 34-15 overall record. Last week, Northeastern picked up a huge seven-inning win with a 18-3 route of UConn before falling to College of Charleston 2-1 in a weekend series. Alex Lane leads the team hitting .392 on the year with five other players batting over .300 this season. The Huskies have scored 415 runs while allowing 287 and have hit 79 homers this season. Wyatt Scotti leads the pitching staff with a 5.25 ERA and 45 strikeouts and holds a 7-5 record.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
The River Hawks are 2-8 against Northeastern since the 2014 season. Northeastern has won the last four meetings, including the last matchup in Lowell. UMass Lowell's last victory came in 2021, a 10-7 win on the road.
SCOUTING THE RED FOXES
Marist will conclude its regular season with the doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Red Foxes are coming off a 2-1 series win over Siena over the weekend. Marist took on America East foe UAlbany in a doubleheader on April 9, winning both games. The Great Danes won the third game between the teams 16-5 on April 30. Ethan Conrad has had a great season at the plate, leading the team with a .394 batting average and 78 hits. He also leads the offense with 16 doubles, 13 triples and 44 RBI. Caleb Kempler has a team0best 3.12 ERA with a 1-1 record. Jack Wren's 41 strikeouts in 39.0 innings leads the pitching staff.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
UMass Lowell is 2-3 against Marist since the 2014 season. The River Hawks are 1-0 at home with that victory coming in the last meeting between the teams, a 10-4 win at LeLacheur Park in 2019.
 
PLAYOFF PICTURE
The River Hawks have concluded their conference slate this season and will be idle in the final weekend of the season. UMass Lowell has clinched a spot in the America East Tournament but will have to wait to see where they will finish in the standings and who they will play in the first round.
 
Bryant won the regular season title and locked up the top seed with UMBC holding the second spot as it stands. NJIT sits third with UMass Lowell in fourth. Binghamton, UAlbany and Maine will battle it out for the final two spots in the tournament in the final weekend. Binghamton is fifth at 9-12 while UAlbany is sixth with an 8-12 record. Maine rounds out the standings at 7-13 in conference play.  
 
NEW PROGRAM RECORD
Carlos Martinez tallied his team-leading 25th double of the season in Sunday's loss to NJIT, setting a UMass Lowell program record for single-season doubles. Martinez has impressed in his first season in blue and white, leading the offense in almost every category. The sophomore leads the conference in doubles and sits tied for the top spot in country.
