River Hawks Set For Battle With UMBC

LOWELL, Mass. - The UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-8, 0-3 AE) returns to the friendly confines of Cushing Field to take on the UMBC Retrievers (3-4, 2-1 AE) on Saturday, April 6 at noon. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
Junior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) scored a pair of goals as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-8, 0-3 AE) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats (4-5, 2-1 AE), 15-6, on Saturday afternoon. With his two tallies on Saturday, Lawhorn has reached a career-high in goals with seven. The River Hawk offense was coupled by senior Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) and freshman Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.), who each extended their scoring streak to three games. Senior Justin Longo (Kingston, N.Y.) and freshman Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) also found twine for UMass Lowell. On the defensive end, junior Alexander Chairs (Ellicott City, Md.) caused three turnovers, and sophomore Luke Renaud (Skaneateles, N.Y.) posted a season-high 17-save effort between the pipes.

LEADING THE FLOCK
Thirteen River Hawks find themselves in the points column after eight games, with junior Khairi Sears (Columbus, Ohio) leading the way with 12 points and freshman James Donnelly (Ottawa, Ontario) right behind with 11 points. Following them, Murphy tallies a team-high nine goals alongside 13 ground balls. Meanwhile, Lawhorn and Soi have totaled seven goals so far. Senior Jack Bird (Buffalo, N.Y.) has had a strong start to the season at the X, posting a .530 faceoff win percentage, while also leading the squad with 48 ground balls. Defensively, junior Alexander Chairs (Ellicott City, Md.) leads his squad with seven caused turnovers, including two the last time out against Binghamton. In net, graduate student Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.) and Renaud have split time, with Pav making 61 saves and Renaud totaling 43 in four appearances.
 
AMERICA EAST HONORS
Following their impressive performances in the season opener against Holy Cross on February 10, Bird was named the America East Faceoff Specialist of the Week, while Frigon took home America East Rookie of the Week honors. Two weeks later, Donnelly was tabbed the America East Rookie of the Week after finding the back of the net twice and adding an assist against Siena.
 
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Retrievers come to Lowell following a 14-13 loss in the final seconds to UAlbany. The UMBC offense is led by senior attack Brian Tregoning who totals a team-high 23 goals and 30 points. The top playmaker on the squad, Mike Doughty, posts 24 assists, which ranks first in the America East. Faceoff specialist Zach Dudley owns a .538 win percentage in 173 faceoffs, while netminder Jayson Tingue has started all seven games, posting a .468 save percentage with 82 goals allowed. 
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
UMass Lowell and UMBC have faced off eight times, with the Retrievers holding a 6-2 edge. Last season, the two teams battled it out in Baltimore, and although UMBC claimed a 15-8 victory, Lawhorn posted a hat trick while sophomore Jackson Dean (Deer Park, Wash.) chipped in two goals.
