River Hawks Host Vermont On Senior Day

LOWELL, Mass. - The UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-10, 0-5 AE) will celebrate Senior Day during its 2023 home finale on Saturday, April 20, when they take on the Vermont Catamounts (5-7, 3-2 AE)
 
LAST TIME OUT
Freshman Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) tallied a career-high three goals, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team fell to the Merrimack Warriors, 14-9, last Friday night. Alongside his three goals, Frigon also tallied four caused turnovers and four ground balls, both personal bests. Senior Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) tallied three goals while junior Khairi Sears (Columbus, Ohio) chipped in with two, and senior Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.) added one. At the X, senior Jack Bird (Buffalo, N.Y.) won 14 of 23 faceoff opportunities, while graduate student Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.) made 17 saves in between the pipes.

LEADING THE FLOCK
Fourteen River Hawks find themselves in the points column after ten games, with Sears and Murphy leading the way with 14 points and junior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) and freshman James Donnelly (Ottawa, Ontario) right behind with 11 points. Murphy, who leads the team with 12 goals, also adds 15 ground balls. Senior Jack Bird (Buffalo, N.Y.) has had a strong season at the X, posting a .527 faceoff win percentage, while also leading the squad with 60 ground balls. Defensively, junior Alexander Chairs (Ellicott City, Md.) leads his squad with seven caused turnovers, including two against Binghamton. In net, all four goalkeepers have seen time, with graduate student Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.) and Renaud splitting the starts. Pav posts a team-high 78 saves, Renaud leads the squad with a .486 save percentage, while O'Brien made his debut against UMBC.
 
SENIOR DAY CELEBRATION
Ahead of the game, the River Hawks will honor graduate students Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.), Kyle Parry (Duxbury, Mass.) and seniors Ben Greco (Franklin, Mass.), Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.), Anthony Mancino (Holbrook, N.Y.), Justin Longo (Kingston, N.Y.), Curtis Redd (Amherst, N.H.), and Jack Bird (Buffalo, N.Y.) with a Senior Day ceremony.

AMERICA EAST HONORS
Following their impressive performances in the season opener against Holy Cross on February 10, Bird was named the America East Faceoff Specialist of the Week, while Frigon took home America East Rookie of the Week honors. Two weeks later, Donnelly was tabbed the America East Rookie of the Week after finding the back of the net twice and adding an assist against Siena.
 
SCOUTING VERMONT
The Catamounts visit Lowell following a 16-12 win over Bryant last Saturday. Vermont's offense is led by junior Charlie Pope and graduate student Brock Haley. Pope, who leads his team with 41 points, tallies 34 goals, the most in the conference. Meanwhile, Haley posts 37 points this season, highlighted by a team-best 21 assists. Defensively, Jack Combs leads his team with 20 caused turnovers alongside 50 ground balls, while faceoff specialist Henry Dodge owns a .540 win percentage in 274 attempts. In net, George Egan has started 10 games, making 152 saves for a .503 save percentage.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
UMass Lowell and Vermont have faced off nine times, with the River Hawks claiming an 8-4 win in 2019.
