BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior
Lea White (Meriden, Conn.) grabbed her second home run of the season, as the UMass Lowell softball team (7-20, 2-5 AE) split a twin bill against UMBC (16-16, 5-6 AE) on Saturday afternoon.
The River Hawks fell, 7-0, in game one before grabbing a 9-2, bounce-back victory in game two.
L. White totaled three hits and three runs on the afternoon to help lead the River Hawk offense. Graduate student Brenna Davenport (Merrimack, N.H.) went 3-for-7 with an RBI and a run, while freshman Isabel Quintanilla (Puyallup, Wash.) collected a double, an RBI and a run. Senior Morgan Fisher (Glassboro, N.J.) and junior Emily Tow (North Kingstown, R.I.) each grabbed two hits and a run, as well.
Freshman Olivia DeCitise (Troy, N.H) started in the circle for game one, pitching 3.2 innings with three strikeouts before junior Jen Slanovec (Bethlehem, Pa.) relieved her. Slanovec finished the contest, allowing three hits and striking out two batters. Graduate student Ryley White (Wareham, Mass.) started game two, pitching a complete game victory, while collecting eight strikeouts.
UMBC opened game one with an RBI infield single to take an early 1-0 advantage. After loading the bases, the home team extended its lead when Emily Riggs was hit by a pitch, making it 2-0 at the end of the first inning.
A line-drive double from Davenport highlighted the River Hawks' next trip to the dish, but UMBC was able to get out of the at-bat unscathed and add to its lead in the home half of the second on a base hit to center to make it 3-0.
In the fourth inning, the Retrievers would stretch the difference to 7-0 on a three-run home run from Ashley Della Guardia and an RBI single from Emily Riggs.
The River Hawks did not allow a run for the remainder of the game, but were unable to cut into the difference, as the Retrievers took the 7-0 decision.
The visitors offense got right to work in game two, however, as L. White led off with an infield single before Quintanilla hit a ball over the center fielder's glove to knock her in and create an early, 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third, L. White delivered again, this time in the form of a solo home run to center field to give the River Hawks a 2-0 advantage. UMBC threatened in the bottom half of the inning, drawing two walks, but R. White and the River Hawk defense prevailed, extinguishing the opportunity with a routine groundout to third.
R. White held the Retrievers scoreless through the first six innings of the contest, allowing just one hit and striking out seven batters.
In the top of the fourth, Tow and Davenport grabbed back-to-back singles before freshman Alaina Santoli (Lovettsville, Va.) walked to load the bases for L. White. The senior stepped up and drove a single under the first baseman's glove to score Tow from third and extend the buffer to 4-0. Davenport then scored UMass Lowell's fifth run on a pass ball, followed by runs from Santoli and L. White, building the lead to 6-0. Senior Elizabeth Frederick (Sunapee, N.H.) then forced a throwing error that allowed Fisher to cross the plate and make it 7-0.
Frederick knocked in the team's eighth run in the top sixth with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Quintanilla from third. The home team was able to get on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Riggs logged an RBI single and Kya Matter added an RBI groundout to first base to make it 8-2.
Davenport added an insurance run for the visitors in the top of the seventh before Frederick recorded the final out of the game to give the River Hawks a 9-2 victory in game two.
The River Hawks will battle for the series win in the finale against UMBC tomorrow, Sunday, April 14, starting at 12 p.m.
