River Hawks Host Dartmouth & Stonehill, Visit Binghamton in Action-Packed Week

LOWELL, Mass. – It will be a quick turnaround for the UMass Lowell baseball team (9-15, 2-3 AE) as the River Hawks host Dartmouth (6-12, 2-4 Ivy) on Tuesday before traveling to Vestal to take on Binghamton (11-13, 2-4 AE) in a weekend series.

LAST TIME OUT
The River Hawks took down Fairfield 10-6 behind a stellar outing from Scott Donahue on Tuesday afternoon. The freshman went 4-5 with three RBIs to lead the way while Carlos Martinez went 3-5 with three RBIs and three runs. Both players tallied two doubles each while Fritz Genther hit his fourth homer of the season. Brendan Holland got the start and struck out two in 3.2 innings. Zach Fortuna went 2.0 frames and sat three hitters to earn the win and move to 1-0 this season. Over the weekend, UMass Lowell dropped games one and two at NJIT. Alfred Mucciarone went 6.1 innings and struck out seven to improve to 2-1 on the year to lead the River Hawks to a win in the series finale. UMass Lowell scored six in the fourth inning led by Carlos Martinez, who went 3-4 with three RBIs to lead the offense.  
 
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
Dartmouth comes to Lowell with a 6-12 record and a 2-4 mark in Ivy League play. The Big Green were swept by Cornell last weekend after beating Yale 2-1 to open their conference slate. Nathan Cmelya leads the offense hitting .366 in 18 games this season. Cmelya has a team-high 26 hits and 34 total bases to go with 11 RBIs and eight runs. Dartmouth has hit six homers and allowed 19 through 18 contests with Kolton Freeman leading the team with three. They are 8-14 on stolen bases and have allowed 34 stolen bases in 51 attempts.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The River Hawks are 5-2 against Dartmouth since the 2015 season, winning the last five contests. The teams met last season in Hanover where UMass Lowell came away with a 6-1 win. Dartmouth's last victory in this matchup came on April 14, 2015, winning the doubleheader in Lowell.
 
SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
Binghamton has an 11-13 overall record and 2-4 conference mark entering of this week of games. The Bearcats went 4-0 last week with a win over Canisius and a series sweep over Middle Tennessee. They met NJIT earlier in the year to open league play and took the series 2-1 before being swept on the road at UMBC. Binghamton has a strong offense with Evin Sullivan leading the team hitting .352 with a team-high 31 hits. Mike Gunning has played in all 24 games and tallied 29 hits to go with team-highs in runs (20), homers (10), and RBIs (27). Gabe Driscoll and John Lumpinski returned to the team for the Bearcats while Nelson Berkwich and Ryan Bates have sub-six ERAs this season.
 
SERIES HISTORY
UMass Lowell is 13-22 against Binghamton going back to the 2014 season. The River Hawks were swept in the series in Vestal last season before taking the return series in Lowell 2-1. Binghamton knocked the River Hawks out of the America East Tournament last season.
 
A LOOK AT THE LEAGUE
Bryant sits atop the league with a 5-1 record in America East play with UAlbany in second with a 3-2 mark. UMBC and NJIT are tied for third at 3-3 with UMass Lowell in fourth at 2-3. Binghamton and Maine round out the table tied at 2-4 in the league.
