Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

River Hawks Tripped Up By Maine, 71-65

ORONO, Maine – Junior Cam Morris III (Alexander City, Ala.) totaled 22 points and 10 rebounds. as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (20-9, 11-5 AE) fell in the final minutes at Maine (15-16, 7-9 AE), 71-65, in the regular-season finale on Tuesday night.

Morris III, who recorded his third double-double of the season, was one of three River Hawks to reach the double-digit mark. Sophomore Brayden O'Connor (Ottawa, Ontario) finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while senior Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) chipped in with 13 points, as well. On the glass, senior Ayinde Hikim (Washington, D.C.) finished with a career-best 11 boards.

Maine started the game strong, knocking down the first four baskets of the game to take an early, 8-0 advantage. UMass Lowell, however, fought right back, scoring ten of the game's next twelve points, including six from Morris III, to knot the game up at 10-10 with 13:29 on the clock. A layup by Kristians Feierbergs briefly put the hosts back in front, but five straight from the River Hawks gave them their first lead of the evening, 15-12, with just over ten minutes remaining in the first half.

The back-and-forth battle continued, as the Black Bears used a quick 7-0 burst to take a two-possession lead, but a triple from junior Xzavier Lino (Phoenix, Arizona) cut the deficit down to one. Maine continued to attack, though, putting together an 11-2 scoring run for their largest lead, 30-20. UMass Lowell retaliated immediately with a trey from O'Connor, which ignited a 10-4 run for the visitors to make it 34-30 with two minutes to play. Although the Black Bears hit a three 20 seconds later, Mincey countered with one of his own to narrow the margin to 37-33 heading into the break.

The River Hawks locked down defensively coming out of the locker room, holding the opposition to only three baskets in over seven minutes. Meanwhile, the squad began to heat up from beyond the arc, as Morris III, O'Connor and senior Yuri Covington (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) each sank a triple as part of a 15-2 run that put the team in front, 50-47, with 9:46 remaining in the second. Despite losing their momentum, the Black Bears worked to even the score at 52-52 with 6:23 to play.

Coming out of a timeout, UMass Lowell quickly retook a two-possession lead off back-to-back layups from Mincey and O'Connor. An and-one by the hosts cut that lead back to one, but Lino struck from downtown again, regaining the four-point buffer for his squad with under four minutes left to go. Maine, however, found its rhythm, going on a 14-4 run to close the game and seal the 71-65 decision.

The River Hawks, who finished second in the America East regular-season standings, will return to action on Saturday, March 9, at 3 p.m. when they host an America East quarterfinal matchup against No. 7 UMBC.
