RIver Hawks Suffer 17-2 Setback at Bryant

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Senior Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) tallied two points, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-7, 0-2 AE) fell to the Bryant Bulldogs (5-3, 1-1 AE), 17-2, on Saturday afternoon.

Murphy, who finished the day with a goal and an assist, added three ground balls. Meanwhile, freshman Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) tallied his sixth goal of the season, marking the second straight game he has found the back of the net. Defensively, graduate student Kyle Parry (Duxbury, Mass.) and freshman Joe Girardi (Watertown, N.Y.) each caused one turnover, while sophomore Luke Renaud (Skaneateles, N.Y.) made 13 saves in net.

The River Hawks started the game strong on the defensive end, as Girardi forced a turnover in the opening seconds to help keep the Bulldogs off the board for over four minutes. Bryant finally struck with 10:55 on the clock though, kickstarting a four goal run in four minutes to own a 4-0 lead. Although the visitor's defense was able to stifle the opposition for another two minutes, the Bulldogs added four more goals to take an 8-0 advantage into the second.

Bringing momentum into the second quarter, Bryant fired off five goals to take a 13-0 lead midway through the period. UMass Lowell locked down defensively, forcing a handful of turnovers while Renaud made two saves to keep the score the same, 13-0, heading into halftime.

The defensive battle between both sides continued into the third quarter, as the game's scoring drought reached 13 straight minutes before the Bulldogs added a goal to make it 14-0 with 10:48 on the clock. The score stayed the same for nearly the entire period, but a goal with one second on the clock extended the opposition's lead entering the fourth.

In the final period, Soi got his squad on the board after taking a pass from Murphy and ripping it past the Bryant goaltender with 11:47 on the clock. Less than a minute later, the River Hawks struck again, this time off the stick of Murphy, to make it 15-2. The Bulldogs, however, wouldn't let it get any closer, adding two goals in the final five minutes, sealing the 17-2 final score.

Next up, the River Hawks take on Binghamton on Saturday, March 30. Opening faceoff is set for noon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
