River Hawk Offense Shines in 93-80 Victory at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) tallied a career-high 31 points and 19 rebounds, as the UMass Lowell River Hawks (16-6, 7-2 AE) cruised to a 93-80 victory at UMBC (7-17, 2-7 AE) on Thursday night.

With the decision, the River Hawks now total a nation-leading nine road wins so far this year.

"This was another great road win against a tough opponent," said Head Coach Pat Duquette. "They made multiple runs in the second half, and our guys responded with poise and execution each time. Now we have very little time and rest before we play a tough NJIT team on Saturday that just knocked off Vermont.

Brooks, who was one of four double-digit scorers for the River Hawks, added three blocks. Behind him, senior Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) added 21 points alongside seven rebounds. Senior Ayinde Hikim (Washington, D.C.) chipped in with 14 points and seven assists, while junior Cam Morris III (Alexander City, Ala.) tallied 12 points. As a unit, UMass Lowell shot 52.3% (34-65) from the field, with 58 points coming from in the paint.

The River Hawks got to work on offense right away, as Hikim found sophomore Brayden O'Connor (Ottawa, Ontario) open in the corner for a triple on the first possession of the game. Although the Retrievers fired back with a three of their own, UMass Lowell stayed hot, stringing together seven straight to jump in front, 10-3, with 17:31 on the clock. The hosts countered with a 9-5 run to make it a one-possession game, but senior Mincey sank a deep three to ignite a 9-0 burst for his team, extending the River Hawks' lead to 24-12 with 11 minutes left in the first.

Looking to chip away at the margin, the Retrievers tallied seven of nine points to pull back within seven. The visitors ended the rally quickly, though, as they locked down on defense and did not allow another basket for over six minutes of play. Meanwhile, Brooks threw down a dunk, kickstarting the UMass Lowell offense as they outscored the opposition, 10-1, to stretch the difference to 36-20 with 3:26 to go in the period. UMBC got back on the board with a layup, but the River Hawks added five of the next seven to take a commanding 41-24 lead at the half.

UMass Lowell then got the scoring started in the second half with a layup from the hands of Brooks, but the Retrievers continued to fight, using a 9-2 spurt to cut the deficit down to 12. The two teams went back-and-forth over the next three minutes, however, the River Hawks found their stride, going on a 14-6 run, backed by eight made free throws, to go up, 72-52, their largest lead of the night, with 9:23 left to play.

The Retrievers proved to be relentless despite the difference, as they used a 12-6 advantage over the next five minutes to pull closer. Morris III responded with four of his own to disrupt the hosts, but they stayed in rhythm, using a 13-4 stretch to make it 86-77 with under a minute to play. The River Hawks would finish near perfect at the free-throw line, though, sealing the 93-80 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks head to New Jersey to take on NJIT on Saturday, February 10. Tip off is set for 4 p.m. at the NJIT Wellness and Events Center.
