Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

River Hawks Tripped Up By Massachusetts, 10-7

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Khairi Sears (Columbus, Ohio) tallied two goals and an assist, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-2) fell to the Massachusetts Minutemen (1-1), 10-7, on Saturday afternoon.

"UMass Amherst is one of the best programs in college lacrosse, and I'm proud of how we stood toe to toe with them," said Head Coach Drew Kelleher. "I'm confident in our group and love our growth this week."

Sears, who tallied his two goals on five shots, including three on goal, was one of four goal scorers for the River Hawks in the contest. Both junior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) and freshman Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals and a ground ball. Sophomore Jackson Dean (Deer Park, Wash.) finished with a goal and an assist, while freshman James Donnelly (Ottawa, Ontario) finished with one helper. In net, graduate student Mark Pav (South Setauket, N.Y.) played all 60 minutes, finishing with a personal-best 13 saves.

The River Hawks opened the game firing on all cylinders, as the defense held the Minutemen scoreless before Soi drilled a shot into the back of the net, giving his squad a 1-0 lead with 11:09 on the clock. Less than three minutes later, the visitors struck again, this time off the stick of Lawhorn, to widen the margin to two. With 6:09 to go, Massachusetts got on the board and cut the deficit in half, but moments later, Lawhorn tallied his second of the match to put his team in front 3-1. The strong defensive efforts from the River Hawks continued, but the Minutemen added two more, knotting the game up 3-3 after the first.

Although the Minutemen opened the second quarter with their fourth goal to jump in front, the River Hawks countered immediately with an equalizer from Soi, his second of the afternoon. Moments later, though, the hosts found their stride, stringing together three goals in three minutes to take a 7-4 lead with just over five remaining in the half. The defense was up to the challenge, however, as it did not allow a goal the remainder of the quarter, while Sears buried his first of the day with 56 seconds on the clock, cutting the deficit to 7-5 heading into the break.

Despite an early goal from Massachusetts making it a three-goal game, the UMass Lowell defense stayed resilient, forcing multiple turnovers and off-target shots to hold the opposition to eight. Meanwhile, the offense continued to pepper shots at the net before Sears snuck one past the keeper to make it 8-6 with just over two minutes to play in the third. The River Hawks regained possession one final time in the quarter, but it remained a two-goal game after three.

The River Hawks opened the fourth strong, with senior Jack Bird (Buffalo, N.Y.) winning the faceoff, setting up Dean's first goal of the season and making it 8-7 less than a minute in. Looking to tie it up, UMass Lowell fired off eight more shots, but the Minutemen fended off the scoring opportunities while adding two of their own, sealing the 10-7 final.
