River Hawks Prepped to Compete in Puerto Rico Clasico

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's basketball team (0-6) will compete in the Puerto Rico Clasico, first taking on UNC Wilmington (4-3) on Friday, November 29 before facing off against San Jose State (4-2) on Saturday, November 30. Tipoff for both contests is set for 4 p.m. at the Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez in Puerto Rico.

Last Time Out for the River Hawks  
UMass Lowell faced Butler, falling to the Bulldogs, 69-44, at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Sophomore Rayne Durant (New Haven, Conn.) scored 12 points with five rebounds. Redshirt-senior Sydney Watkins (Indianapolis, Ind.) and senior Alex Gitchenko (Ashdod, Israel) each notched 10 points. Watkins also generated four steals, three rebounds, and three assists, while Gitchenko added three steals. Freshman Sille-Liis Mölder (Tallinn, Estonia) recorded seven points with six boards and two assists.   

The River Hawks would gain the lead in the second quarter, but Butler would answer back with a nine point run and hold onto the advantage for the remainder of the contest.  

Scouting the Seahawks 
UNC Wilmington recently lost to Norfolk State University, 71-52. Taylor Henderson guided the Seahawks with 13 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. Ali Zelaya followed behind with 10 points, nine boards, two assists, two blocks and one steal. The Seahawks were able to outshoot their opponents from behind the arc (33.3% to 31.3%) and at the foul line (72.2% to 40.0%).

The River Hawks and the Seahawks will meet for the first time in tomorrow's contest.  

Scouting the Spartans 
San Jose State most recently played against California State University Northbridge and grabbed the 62-44 win at home. Hennie Van Schaik completed a double-double, scoring 15 points and collecting 12 boards, while also adding two assists to lead the Spartans to their victory. Three of San Jose State's players recorded nine points apiece, including Rylei Waugh, Sofia Kelemeni and Sydni Summers. Djessira Diawara contributed with 14 rebounds. The Spartans were able to outshoot their opponents from all ranges.

This will mark the first meeting between the River Hawks and the Spartans.  

Leading UMass Lowell 
Durant is averaging 11.8 points per game, leading the River Hawks offensively. Rice currently averages 6.3 rebounds a game, while Watkins leads UMass Lowell in three categories, totaling 17 steals, 16 assists, and three blocks so far.

The River Hawks will travel back to the Northeast to take on Le Moyne on Saturday, December 7 with a tipoff scheduled for 12 p.m.
