River Hawks' Comeback Efforts Come Up Just Short, Falling to Saint Louis, 93-90

SAINT LOUIS, MO. – Freshman Martin Somerville (Bowie, Md.) tallied a career-high 21 points, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team's (5-3) comeback efforts fell just short against the Saint Louis Billikens (4-2), falling 93-90, in the second game of the 314 Classic on Wednesday night.
Despite trailing by 19 with 9:33 remaining in the game, the River Hawks refused to go down without a fight, scoring seven unanswered to cut the lead to 80-68. Although Saint Louis responded with a trey of its own, UMass Lowell instantly retaliated, this time with an 11-0 run thanks to two triples from Somerville and one from fifth year Anthony Blunt (Glen Dale, Md.) to make it 83-79 with just under five minutes to play. The River Hawks stayed hot from beyond the arc, draining three more from deep to pull within one, 89-88, with just over a minute to play. Following a basket by the Billikens, senior Quincy Clark (Columbus, Ohio) drained a deep two with only three seconds remaining to make it a one-point game once again, and although the River Hawks gained possession one more time, fifth year Yuri Covington's (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) off-balance triple left his fingers just after the buzzer, sealing the 93-90 decision in favor of the home team.
Somerville, who had a personal-best six makes from beyond the arc, was one of five River Hawks to reach double-digits in the midweek thriller. Covington added 15, including a perfect, 3-for-3 from deep, while senior Cam Morris III (Alexander City, Ala.) tallied 13 points and eight rebounds. Fifth year Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) chipped in with 13, while fifth year Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) rounded things out with 12 points, two blocks and two steals.
The opening minutes proved to be a back-and-forth offensive battle, with both sides trading shots, resulting in an early 10-9 lead for the Billikens at the 17:25 mark. Although the hosts used two consecutive triples to make it a seven-point margin, the River Hawks fought right back, trading shots with the opposition, capped off by a mid-range jumper from Brooks to cut it to a two-score difference. Saint Louis responded though, using a 10-3 stretch to expand the lead to 12 before layups from Mincey and Morris III chopped it to 30-22 with just over 10 minutes to go in the first.
Moments later, following a 7-2 burst by Saint Louis, Mincey found his stride, converting on both ends of an and-1 and adding a jumper for a 5-0 stretch. The offensive battle continued from both sides, with Somerville adding five, highlighted by his first triple of the night, to make it 41-34. Less than two minutes later, after two baskets from the opposition, UMass Lowell scored five in a row, including a three from junior Xzavier Lino (Phoenix, Ariz.) to pull within six, 45-39. The Billikens answered immediately, using a 10-4 run to close out the first and take a 55-43 lead into the locker room.

Despite momentum on the visitors' side, the hosts attacked, going on an 18-2 run for the largest lead of the night, 75-54. UMass Lowell countered with seven of the next nine points, before Saint Louis added three to make it 80-61, setting up the game's tight finish.
Next up, the River Hawks continue their three-game road trip when they head to Connecticut to take on the CCSU Blue Devils on Sunday, December 1. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. at Detrick Gymnasium.
