River Hawks Fight To 1-1 Draw Against UMBC

BALTIMORE, MD. – Junior Calvin Scholten (Hengelo, Netherlands) scored his second goal of the season, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (6-1-4, 1-0-1 AE) battle to a 1-1 draw against the UMBC Retrievers (4-4-3, 1-0-1 AE) on Saturday night.

"I'm really proud of the guys," said head coach Kyle Zenoni. "They showed strong character to get a point. We fought so hard as a team. We played around 30 minutes down a player on the road and still almost grabbed a goal at the very end. We know every game will be a battle and now we have to prepare for another great team in Bryant."

Scholten, who now sits third on the team with six points, was assisted by graduate student Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia), who now has two assists this season. Joining Scholten with shots on goal were seniors Kotaro Natsume (Toyohashi, Aichi, Japan), Shunnosuke Nakajima (Yokohama, Japan), Yanis Lakhlifi (La Crau, France), and junior Oscar Perez (Sagunto, Spain). In net, junior JR Gawel (Leonardtown, Md.) made six saves and allowed only one goal.

The game proved to be defensive-focused in the early minutes, with both sides battling to move the ball into the attacking end of the field. Although neither side found an opportunity in the first ten minutes, the River Hawks were first to log a shot with 13:47 on the clock. Moving down the right side, junior Iñaki Esnaola (Junin, Argentina) juked past his defender before sending a high crossing pass into the box. After a header put the ball loose just in front of the net, senior Lakhlifi raced in with an attempt to punch it into the back of the net, but the Retrievers' keeper got his hands on it, keeping the match scoreless.

The physical battle continued through the first half, with neither side attempting another shot for over 25 minutes. UMBC began to pressure the UMass Lowell defense, but the River Hawks were up for the challenge, not allowing anything to come from a corner kick in the 30th minute. Ten minutes later, the Retrievers tallied their first shot of the evening, which went over the crossbar, keeping the game scoreless heading into the break.

The River Hawks wasted no time starting the scoring in the second half, finding the back of the net less than five minutes in. After collecting a pass from senior Jonathan Ferriera (Ashland, Mass.), Francés Poquet dashed through the middle of the field towards the box, dumping the ball off to Scholten on the right-hand side. With only the goalie in front of him, the Netherlands native ripped his shot between the keeper and the post, putting the River Hawks in front 1-0.
The Retrievers responded immediately, though, scoring 15 seconds later to knot up the score.

Ten minutes later, freshman Matteo Costa (Frankfurt am Main, Germany) received his second yellow card of the night, which in turn became a red card and removed him from the game and had the River Hawks play down a man for the remainder of the match. With a man advantage, UMBC put pressure on UMass Lowell for the rest of the night, firing
off 13 straight shots over 25 minutes. The visitor's defense, however, was lockdown, using six blocks and six high-pressure saves by Gawel to keep the hosts from taking the lead. In the final ten seconds, the River Hawks found one final opportunity to score, as Nakajima ripped a shot from the left side of the net, but the goaltender rejected the attempt, sealing the 1-1 draw.

Next up, the River Hawks return home to take on the conference opponent Bryant on Saturday, October 12. Kickoff
is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Cushing Field.
