Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

River Hawks Fall To Binghamton, 1-0

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior Liam Ireland (Yarmouth, Maine) tallied two shots on goal, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (6-3-4, 1-2-1 AE) fell to the Binghamton Bearcats (8-5-2, 2-2-0 AE), 1-0, on Saturday night at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

"It was an emotional game and seeing a player go down like that is scary," said head coach Kyle Zenoni. "The boys regrouped and played really well at times. It is disappointing in the result but big picture I'm just lucky our player is safe and okay. This is a special team and I'm proud of my guys for the fight. We limited their chances and gave them only one real look and they took advantage of it. We know we have a fight on our hands and we'll now recover and prep for a big match at home vs. NJIT."

Ireland, who led the squad with two shots on goal, was one of three River Hawks to record two shots. Graduate student Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia) and junior Iñaki Esnaola (Junin, Argentina) each chipped in with two shots, including one on goal, while senior Kotaro Natsume (Toyohashi, Aichi, Japan) and junior Calvin Scholten (Hengelo, Netherlands) both had a shot on target. In net, junior JR Gawel (Leonardtown, Md.) made one save in 90 minutes of action.

Although the Bearcats opened the game with a shot, it was the River Hawks who dominated possession early, holding the hosts to only one shot in the first 11 minutes. Meanwhile, UMass Lowell fired off a trio of shots, including one on goal from both Esnaola and Ireland, but Binghamton's keeper got in front of both to keep the visitors off the board. Continuing to apply pressure, the River Hawks found one of their best opportunities when junior Oliver Holmstrom (Gävle, Sweden) flicked the ball downfield to Francés Poquet. The graduate student raced into the box with a defender on each side of him before taking the shot, but it just missed right of the net, keeping the score at 0-0.

In the 30th minute, the Bearcats capitalized on a set piece, as Tom Cohen lofted the ball into the box, setting up Cailen Thomas for a header to give his team a 1-0 lead. UMass Lowell didn't let it slow them down though, as less than two minutes later Scholten tallied his first shot of the night that was rejected by the goaltender. The River Hawks continued the strong defensive performance throughout the remainder of the half and added one more shot on the offensive end, but the score remained 1-0 heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the River Hawks' aggressiveness persisted on offense as Francés Poquet drilled a shot at the bottom left of the net that was tipped away. The Bearcats quickly matched the defensive presence of UMass Lowell, as both sides held each other shotless for the next ten minutes of play. The hosts finally logged their first shot of the second half in the 60th minute, and although the River Hawks matched with two of their own in the 64th and 65th minute, the game stayed a one-goal difference with 25 minutes remaining.

With time winding down, the River Hawks played up-tempo as they looked for the equalizer. The Bearcats, however, were up to the challenge, allowing only one shot on goal the remainder of the way, sealing the 1-0 decision.

Next
up, the River Hawks return home when they host the NJIT Highlanders on Saturday, October 26. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Cushing Field.
