VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior
Quinton Mincey (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and junior
Cam Morris III (Alexander City, Ala.) logged 17 points apiece, as the UMass Lowell men's basketball team (14-4, 5-0 AE) cruised to an 80-60 victory at America East foe Binghamton (8-9, 0-4 AE) on Saturday afternoon to extend its win streak to seven games.
"This was a great way to finish up a tough road trip," said Head Coach
Pat Duquette. "We had a lot of different guys step up over the past two games, which was great to see. This group has proven that we can go on the road and find ways to win against quality opponents. I'm really happy we were able to sustain our lead against a well-coached, tough Binghamton team, who kept coming at us."
The seven-game win streak marks the second-longest in Division I program history for the River Hawks, just behind a nine-game stretch from early in the 2022-23 season. The squad also remains undefeated in America East action with Saturday's decision and becomes the first team in the league to reach five wins in 2023-24.
One of five double-digit scorers for the River Hawks, Mincey also recorded six rebounds and a career-high five steals. Morris III added four boards, two blocks and a steal to his stat line. Senior
Ayinde Hikim (Washington, D.C) chipped in with 16 points and four assists, while sophomore
Brayden O'Connor (Ottawa, Ontario) and senior
Max Brooks (Waldorf, Md.) added 13 and 11 points, respectively. As a unit, UMass Lowell shot 52.7% (29-55) from the field, with 36 points coming off the bench. Additionally, the visitors capitalized on 14 Bearcat turnovers with 21 points coming off those turnovers.
The River Hawks got to work quickly on the offensive end in the outing, scoring on their first three possessions, to take a 6-0 edge. The early lead did not last much longer, though, as Binghamton used a 12-6 stretch to level the score, 12-12, with 13:14 on the clock. Looking to put his squad back in front, O'Connor drilled a triple before Mincey and Morris III sank back-to-back layups to go back up by five midway through the first half.
Although two baskets from the hosts made it a one-possession game, the UMass Lowell offense caught fire, going on a 9-0 run that was capped off by a triple from Hikim, to take a double-digit lead, 29-18, with just over six minutes to go in the period. The Bearcats would not back down, scoring five of the next seven points, but two three-pointers from O'Connor ignited another strong stretch for his side, this time 12-2 to put the River Hawks up 43-25 at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the visitors picked up right where they left off, outscoring Binghamton, 8-4, to take a commanding, 51-29 lead with 16:59 on the clock. The hosts continued to fight, putting up 17 points over the next seven minutes of play, but the River Hawks responded each time to hold a 21-point advantage, 67-46, with ten minutes remaining.
The game quickly became a defensive battle, as the two sides combined for only five points over nearly five minutes of action. Binghamton's Armon Harried broke the scoring drought, before a layup from Morris III got his team back on the board. UMass Lowell fought off any final comeback attempts in the last five minutes, securing the 80-60 victory.
Next up, the River Hawks return home to take on the Vermont Catamounts on Thursday, January 25. The opening tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
