Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

River Hawks Face 2-1 Setback at Boston University

BOSTON – Graduate student Matthias Stingl (Deggendorf, Germany) tallied his first goal of the season as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (1-1-1) fell to the Boston University Terriers (3-1-0), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

Sophomore Calvin Scholten (Hengelo, Netherlands) tallied the lone assist on Stingl's goal, good for his first point as a River Hawk. Contributing to the offensive attack was sophomore Liam Ireland (Yarmouth, Maine), who recorded two shots, including one on goal. In net, junior Adam Henry (Fort Myers, Fl.) made two saves in 90 minutes.

"That is a tough one to swallow," said Head Coach Kyle Zenoni. "That is a really well coached team. Kevin does a great job. We knew it was going to be a battle and I think our guys were up for it. We had a couple really good chances we just didn't put away and in a game like that we need to score those chances. The guys responded well with scoring early in the second half and put the pressure on BU. We have a good group that is very talented."

It didn't take long for the River Hawks to put the Terrier defense under pressure, as the visitors found their first scoring opportunity of the afternoon in the seventh minute. Following a few quick passes moved the ball downfield, junior Shunnosuke Nakajima (Yokohama, Japan) sent a pass across the box for Ireland. With the ball still in the air, the Maine native launched a shot off with his right foot, but quick reflexes from Boston University's goalie kept the game scoreless.

The first half continued to be a battle, with the two teams combining for 13 fouls in the first 45 minutes. Although the hosts strung off four shots in a 10-minute span, the River Hawks defense did not budge, fending off all the Terrier attempts. UMass Lowell retaliated with three straight shots of their own, but in the 39th minute a goal by Boston University's Alex Bonnington gave them the lead. Less than two minutes later, an own goal put the Terriers ahead 2-0 heading into the half.

The River Hawks came out of the break aggressive on offense as they looked to get on the board. In the 49th minute, Scholten sent a corner kick high into the box, setting up for Stingl, who headed it past the keeper to cut the lead to 2-1. The Terriers, however, quickly countered with two corners and a shot of their own, but a crucial save by Henry kept the defecit to one.

In the final 20 minutes of the match, the River Hawks continued to dominate ball possession, consistently getting the ball to the Boston University half of the pitch. Despite the aggressiveness of the River Hawks, who fired three shots in the final minutes looking for the equalizer, the hosts fought off each of their attempts, sealing the 2-1 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks will head home for the first time this season to battle Merrimack on Alumni Day on Saturday, September 9. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Cushing Field.
