HANOVER, N.H. – Graduate student
Julia Edholm (Stockholm, Sweden) scored her second goal of the season in the final ten minutes of the game to help the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (0-3-4) earn a 1-1 draw against the Dartmouth Big Green (5-0-3) on Sunday afternoon.
"I'm happy with the performance, but we wanted to push for the win. We stayed hungry, especially in the second half and were asking them some questions," said head coach
Mira Novak. "I think we created good chances against a good defense. We were good defensively and happy with the team and how the team reacted after Dartmouth scored."
Edholm had the lone goal while sophomore
Maddie Guthrie (Stow, Mass.) picked up her first collegiate point with the assist. Junior
Laura Cetina (Galicia, Spain) and senior
Chloe Layne (Wrentham, Mass.) combined for three shots on goal. Redshirt-senior
Taylor Burgess (Mendon, Mass.) made two saves on the afternoon. UMass Lowell outshot the Big Green 13-7 and had a 10-4 advantage on corners.
"Good for Julia, scoring a goal here. Credit to her for finding the ball and getting us back into the game. I'm happy with our back line as well. They are in good communication and are staying solid in the back for us," added Novak. "Overall, happy with the performance. We're hungry for that win and we're looking forward to starting conference play."
The first half was a stalemate with just five shots between the sides. One shot on goal apiece and one save from each goalkeeper kept the game square after 45 minutes.
Chloe Layne and
Luka Marceau tallied shots for the River Hawks.
UMass Lowell's first chance came in the 10
th minute after great buildup play found
Marissa Sage on the right wing. The freshman's cross found Marceau whose shot went off target.
Chloe Layne would have a chance three minutes later with a close-range header forcing a save from Hardy.
The hosts had an opportunity to break the deadlock in the 15
th minute with a left-footed strike from Daisy Granholm that was saved by
Taylor Burgess. The veteran called to action again in the 26
th minute with a commanding punch through traffic in the box to clear the ball from danger.
Hope Santaniello had a chance from the top of the box in the 44
th minute that went wide before a late push from the hosts forced Burgess to come off her live and once again punch the ball clear. Dartmouth held most of the possession in the opening 45 minutes, but the teams went into the break scoreless.
The River Hawks put the pressure on early with two corners in the first three minutes of the second half. In the 50
th minute, Dartmouth intercepted a pass and tried to cathc the River Hawks on the counter. The shot went wide, but the threat was there.
Kirti Craig and
Nadja Andersen each had great chances to open the scoring as the River Hawks controlled the pace of play for the first 20 minutes of the half. Despite the visitors' possession, Dartmouth was the side to break the deadlock. Audrey Marin's header in the 68
th minute gave the hosts the lead against the run of play.
The response from the River Hawks was great as the pressure continued in the Big Green's defensive third.
Julia Edholm found an equalizer in the 81
st minute, heading in a brilliant delivery from the corner from
Maddie Guthrie.
Edholm's goal would secure a 1-1 draw in Hanover. UMass Lowell moves to 0-3-4 while Dartmouth now sits at 5-0-3. The River Hawks return to action on Sunday, September 24 to host NJIT at Cushing Field as conference play begins.
