LOWELL, Mass. – Sunday's contest has been canceled due to weather in the Lowell area. The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (0-3-3) and Holy Cross Crusaders (2-3-3) played 33 minutes before the game was called off.
The Crusaders had the first chance of the game in the sixth minute coming from a direct free kick. The in-swinging ball found a player at the back post, but the header went just over the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
Just two minutes later, the River Hawks worked the ball through the midfield and into the final third. Senior
Calliste Brookshire's (Kingston, Mass.) cross found junior
Laura Cetina (Galicia, Spain) at the back post, who squared the ball to freshman
Luka Marceau (Newton, Mass.) in the six-yard box. The Holy Cross defense did well to close the space and force a rushed shot that was saved by the goalkeeper.
UMass Lowell began to move the ball well as the game went with another good chance coming in the 20
th minute. Senior
Chloe Layne (Wrentham, Mass,) and
Calliste Brookshire had a nice give-and-go down the right side of the field to carve through the Crusader defense. Layne found space at the top of box to get a shot off, forcing a diving save that earned a corner kick.
After 33 minutes of play, the game was paused due to lighting in the area and was subsequently canceled because of the weather. The game will not be made up at this time.
The River Hawks are back in action Sunday, September 18 with a visit to Dartmouth.
