Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

River Hawks Fight To 1-1 Draw Against Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Sophomore Oliver Holmstrom (Gävle, Sweden) tallied his first career goal as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (0-0-1) fought to a 1-1 draw against the Lafayette Leopards (0-0-1) on Friday night.

"First game of the season on the road, grass surface was pretty wet, and many new players playing their first Division I game. I couldn't be more proud of the guys," said head coach Kyle Zenoni. "We had many positives from the game and some things we need to work on of course. I'm proud of the fight and the willingness to roll up the sleeves and battle."

Junior Kotaro Natsume (Toyohashi, Aichi, Japan) recorded an assist on the lone UMass Lowell goal, marking his first career point. Also chipping in on the offensive end was sophomore Michael Oliveri Jr. (West Islip, N.Y.), who logged a shot on goal. In net, junior Adam Henry (Fort Myers, Fl.) made six saves in his first appearance a River Hawk.

Lafayette opened the game with immediate pressure on the River Hawks, logging their first corner of the game less than two minutes in. Although the Leopards were able to maintain possession in the attacking zone, the UMass Lowell defense stood strong, fighting off the hosts' scoring attempts, including three impressive saves from junior Adam Henry (Fort Myers, Fl.). However, in the 26th minute, Lafayette's Hale Lombard found the back of the net from outside the box, giving his team the 1-0 lead.

With less than five minutes to go in the first half, the River Hawks found one of their best scoring chances of the night. Moving down the right side of the field, Natsume launched a crossing pass over four defenders, setting up the Holmstrom header to get UMass Lowell on the board. Gaining momentum, the visitors continued to move the ball down the field, but the Leopards held off any more advances, keeping the game knotted 1-1 heading into the break.

The two teams came out of the locker rooms energized, as they each fired off a shot in the first five minutes. Following the back-and-forth battle, the River Hawks found an opening, racing down the field as they looked to set up a shot opportunity. After collecting a pass from senior Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia), Oliveri Jr. launched a shot from outside the box, but a diving save by Huff prevented UMass Lowell from taking the lead.

In the final ten minutes, the Leopards brought an aggressive offense attack. Staying resilient, the River Hawks defense continued to make key stops, including a diving save by Henry in the final minutes, securing the 1-1 draw.

Next up, the River Hawks head to Boston to take on Northeastern on Monday, August 28. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Parsons Field.
