River Hawks Ready to Take On 2023

8/24/2023 3:00:00 PM

With September approaching, the UMass Lowell men’s soccer team is set to return to the field and kick off the 2023 season. Led by Head Coach Kyle Zenoni, the River Hawks will look to make a statement and earn the respect of their opponents in his second year at the helm.

The 2023 campaign begins on the road on Friday, August 25 at 7:30 p.m. against Lafayette.

It’s always fun when you get to work with the whole team in the spring, and then they go on break for the summer. Then you’re just waiting. Now that everyone’s back it’s fun to be around everyone. The environment is really good, and the guys are hungry.

With a roster that features many new faces, UMass Lowell will look for leadership from their five graduate students and three seniors including Denis Petro (Michalovce, Slovakia), Matthias Stingl (Deggendorf, Germany), Javier Torres (Málaga, Spain), and Guillermo Francés Poquet (Enguera, Valencia).

During the offseason, Zenoni added 14 new players to his roster, including eight transfers and four freshmen. The group will bring a mix of experience and youth to a set of returners ready to compete.

The incoming class features players from all over the world including Japan, Argentina, France, Cape Verde, Canada, and the Netherlands, as well as a few local players from the United States.

“I think the biggest thing for them is understanding how we play, and the work that it takes to play at this level,” commented Zenoni. “I expect that if they can do that, then they will have a chance to get in the lineup and contribute.”

Following the season opener against Lafayette, the River Hawks will stay on the road to take on in-state opponents Northeastern (Aug. 28) and Boston University (Sep. 3). UMass Lowell will then host local rival Merrimack on September 9 to open the home slate. The team will then round out its September non-conference schedule with a home game against Drexel (Sep. 12) before taking on CCSU on the road (Sep. 16).

“We try to play teams that are going to compete in their own conferences. It's quite a few road games, but I believe if you can win on the road, then you can win when it really matters. I think with this schedule, we can see us fight a lot on the road and build character as we go. I think the non-conference schedule is competitive, and I expect us to fight in every game as well.”

This year it's about us continuing to grow, compete, and getting better. We know respect needs to be earned, and we know what we have to do to gain that. I know that everyday we try to improve and leave everything out on the field from practice to every game, and it's fun to see us grow.
