River Hawks Open Home Slate Against Massachusetts, #15 South Carolina

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (0-1-1, 0-0 AE) opens the home slate on Thursday, August 24 to host the Massachusetts Minutewomen (1-0-1, 0-0 A-10) in a Kennedy Cup clash at Cushing Field. The River Hawks will then play host to #15 South Carolina (1-0-1, 0-0 SEC) on Sunday August 27 at 1:00 p.m.

LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks are searching for their first win of the season after the opening week of the season. UMass Lowell fell to Merrimack 2-1 on opening day and played to a 1-1 draw at Fairfield on Sunday afternoon. Calliste Brookshire has scored both goals for the River Hawks this season, picking up where she left off last year. Taylor Burgess has gotten off to a start in goal, making 10 saves through the first two games. The veteran made several big saves against the Stags to help secure a point for the River Hawks.
 
SCOUTING THE MINUTEWOMEN
Massachusetts started the season with a win and a draw in the opening week of the new season. The Minutewomen defeated Stony Brook 2-1 on the road to open the campaign with a victory before playing to a 0-0 draw at Vanderbilt on Sunday. Ashley Lamond and Nia Hislop have found the back of the net this season with a goal apiece while Emma Pedolzky and Grace Pinkus have registered assists. Both goalkeepers have seen time in goal already this season with Bella Mendoza leading the way with six saves and a 1-0-1 record.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
UMass Lowell is 1-1-2 against Massachusetts since the 2019 season. The teams played to a 2-2 draw in Amherst last season. The River Hawks last victory against Massachusetts came in 2020, a 3-0 win at Cushing Field.
 
SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS
South Carolina comes to Lowell ranked 15th in the country in week two of the season. The Gamecocks tied #25 Clemson 0-0 on opening day before picking up a first win of the season with a 6-0 thrashing of Jacksonville on Sunday. Reagan Schubach leads the team with two goals and one assist in 58 minutes played this season. Four other players have found the back of the net and five other players have registered an assist.  Heather Hinz has started both games in goal, making three saves with a 1-0-1 record.
 
MATCHUP HISTORY
Sunday is the first meeting between UMass Lowell and South Carolina.
 
VETERAN CORE
Calliste Brookshire enters her senior season following a 15-point junior campaign. The senior totaled seven goals last season and has two goals in two games to begin the 2023 season. Taylor Burgess returns between the posts and has made big saves already this season. Emma Mitchell and Julia Edholm have provided the River Hawks with a veteran presence on and off the field and will continue to lead as the season goes on.
 
INSTANT IMPACT
The newest class of River Hawks have made an early impact on the team this season. Freshmen Marissa Sage, Eliana Parreira, Diana Jedrychowski, Luka Marceau and Kaitlyn Tung have put in good minutes in the opening two games and will continue to be called on as the season rolls forward. Transfers Hope Santaniello and Laura Cetina are clear offensive threats each game and will be looked to for scoring this season.
