LOWELL, Mass. – Four River Hawks have been named to the men's and women's 2023 America East Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Teams, as announced by the conference office on Thursday.
On the men's side, the River Hawks and Binghamton are tied for the most student-athletes on the list, as each school has three.
Graduate student
Drew Everett (Amesbury, Mass.) returns to the All-Academic Team for the fifth time in his career. He earned the honors after last year's outdoor season, on top of three consecutive cross country All-Academic nods.
Boasting a 3.88 GPA in Chemical Engineering, Everett is a four-time America East Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient while performing at a high level on the track for the River Hawks. He finished second in the 10K at the 2023 America East Outdoor Championships (30:56.79), as well as eighth in the 5K (15:04.13). At the Raleigh Relays on March 24, he also set a personal best in the 10K, collecting a 29:43.40 mark.
The other two members of the men's squad to make the list are juniors
Michael Makiej (Andover, Mass.) and
Hunter Marion (Templeton, Mass.). It is the first All-Academic appearance for both of these student-athletes in their second year of eligibility.
Makiej shined this season in both the classroom and the high jump. His 3.97 GPA in Philosophy with a minor in Legal Studies and fifth-place finish at the 2023 America East Championships earned him the Elite 18 Award for posting the highest GPA of any athlete to finish top eight in their event at the America East Championships. Makiej is also a two-time America East Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient and multi-time member of the UMass Lowell dean's list.
Marion is also a dual-threat, excelling in the classroom and on the track. Much like Makiej, he is a two-time America East Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient and multi-time dean's lister. He boasts a 3.91 GPA while pursuing a degree in Mathematics. At the 2023 America East Outdoor Championships, Marion smashed his personal record in the 10K, finishing fourth with a time of 31:05.12. He competed in the 5K, as well, earning fifth place with a 14:56.60 mark. He also set another personal best in the 1,500m race at the 2023 George Davis Invitational with a time of 4:01.76 and sixth place.
For the women, graduate student
Izzy Giesing (Bradford, Vt.) represents the River Hawks with a 3.86 GPA in Engineering Management. She has now been named to a whopping nine different America East All-Academic Teams throughout her career, earning a spot on the list three times for the past three years. She is a four-time America East Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient and has made the dean's list more than a handful of times. Giesing leads on the track as one of the River Hawks' top runners, as well. This outdoor season, she won the 1,500m race at the 2023 America East Outdoor Championships with a 4:22.73 mark and was part of the third-place 4x800 relay team (9:17.01). She also picked up a victory and personal-best time in the 400m race at the Friar Invitational (55.86), while punching her ticket to the NCAA East Preliminaries with a third-place finish in the 800m at the Virginia Challenge (2:03.81).
