Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

River Hawks Tripped Up, 15-8, by UMBC

BALTIMORE—The UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (0-9, 0-4 America East) suffered a 15-8 setback at the hands of UMBC (7-3, 2-2 AE) on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) continued his dominant scoring performance with his third hat trick of the season. Senior Nick Harvath (Whitmore Lake, Mich.) matched Lawhorn's team-high three points with three of his own off two goals and a helper. Freshman Jackson Dean (Deer Park, Wash.) and sophomore Khairi Sears (Columbus, Ohio) rounded out scoring with Dean notching two and Sears tacking on one. In addition to Harvath's helper, four other River Hawks landed in the assist column with one each: junior Jake Davis (Franklin, Mass.), graduate student Sean Parker (Flemington, N.J.), graduate student Dakota Clark (Bedford, N.H.) and freshman Owen Wills (Kingston, Ontario).

Freshman faceoff specialist Devin German (Acton, Mass.) went 11-for-25 and collected a team and season-high nine groundballs. Defensively, Dean registered one caused turnover alongside senior Cody Stevens (Windham, N.H.) and graduate student Zach D'Amico (Wrentham, Mass.). Freshman Luke Renaud (Skaneateles, N.Y.) stopped 16 shots and scooped up one ground ball in his ninth start.

"I'm so proud of how our guys competed today. Our bench was engaged and bought in, which gave us a great opportunity to compete," commented Head Coach Drew Kelleher. "We've had great weeks of practice and know we will continue to get better."

The Retrievers ran out to a quick lead, knocking in six uninterrupted goals across the first 15 minutes of play. Dean stifled UMBC's building momentum with the final strike of the first. Snagging the feed from Parker, the rookie midfielder whipped in his fourth of the year to cut the lead to 6-1 to cap the frame.

UMass Lowell turned up the offensive production in the second quarter, outscoring the home squad 4-3 to stay within reach. UMBC struck with 9:01 left in the half to push the lead back to six, but Sears responded half a minute later with his lone goal of the afternoon. Lawhorn followed up with a second-quarter hat trick to send the River Hawks to the locker room down 9-5 at the half.

A defensive start to the back half kept both teams in a scoring drought for the majority of the third block. UMBC cut the stalemate with a pair of goals, but Harvath put the River Hawks back in the mix with 3:22 on the clock. Despite goals from Dean and Harvath in the middle of the fourth, two-goal runs by UMBC to bookend the period ultimately locked in the 15-8 decision.

The River Hawks are back at home next Friday, April 14, to take on crosstown rival Merrimack for the team's Spread Respect game. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
