River Hawks Mount Second-Half Comeback in 11-9 Victory at Boston University

4/5/2023 7:10:00 PM

Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Izzy Liquori (Agawam, Mass.) tallied four goals and an assist as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (6-6) took down the Boston University Terriers (6-5), 11-9, on Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

"It was a solid team win," said head coach Lisa Miller. "The defense gained traction as the game went on and almost shut them out down the stretch. The attack stay composed and we were able to overcome the slow start and draw control differential. Pleased with the performance and it says something about our resilience."

Tying Liquori with a game-high five points, sophomore Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) recorded two goals and three assists. Senior Grace Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) totaled three goals for her second straight hat trick, while junior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) chipped in with two goals. Junior Emerson Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.) was all over the stat sheet with four ground balls, two draw controls, and one caused turnover. Defensively, senior Caroline Klim (Wrentham, Mass.) led the squad with three caused turnovers, and freshman Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.) made 12 saves in net.

Both sides opened the game strong defensively, not allowing a shot for nearly three minutes. Although Boston University's first shot found the back of the net with 12:20 on the clock, UMass Lowell worked quickly, responding with a goal from Grace Hansen only a minute later. The Terriers, however, quickly took control and dominated possession, putting together a 4-0 run to hold a 5-1 lead after the first.

Entering the second period, Boston University picked up where they left off, adding two goals in under five minutes to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Attempting to make a comeback, UMass Lowell's defense locked down, forcing multiple turnovers to give the offense an opportunity to strike. With 6:19 to play, Catlin found Grace Hansen open in front of the net, setting the senior up for her second goal. Just over a minute later, Liquori fired a shot past the keeper to pull within four, and Grace Hansen followed with her third goal of the match to make it a 7-4 game heading into the break.

Early in the second half, a penalty by the River Hawks gave the Terriers a woman-up advantage, which they used to pull ahead by four. Once again cutting into the deficit, Liquori launched a shot from eight yards out that took a hard bounce off the ground and went over the goalie's shoulder to trim the lead down to three. UMass Lowell had a woman-up advantage of their own, which Catlin used to tally her first goal of the afternoon, before adding one more with 2:37 on the clock to pull the River Hawks within one heading into the fourth.

Heading into the final quarter on a 3-0 scoring stretch, the River Hawks continued to control the ball and set up scoring opportunities. With 11:50 remaining, Brockbank sprinted past a defender before firing a shot into the top corner of the net, tying the game at 8-8. Moments later, Liquori and Brockbank went back-to-back, giving the visitors a two-goal advantage, their first of the day. Although Boston University added another goal with under five minutes to play, Liquori scored once more with 2:01 to goal, sealing the 11-9 comeback victory.

Next up, the River Hawks return home to take on Dartmouth in their Morgan's Message Dedication game on Tuesday, April 11. Opening draw is set for 7 p.m. at Cushing Field.
