River Hawks Look to Bounce Back with Four-Game Week

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (3-20, 0-6 AE) will look to get on the right track with another four-game week ahead. The River Hawks visit the Dartmouth Big Green (1-18, 0-5 IVY) for a midweek game before hosting the Bryant Bulldogs (12-11, 4-2 AE) for a weekend series at LeLacheur Park.

SERIES HISTORY
The River Hawks are 11-4 against Dartmouth all-time, dating back to the 1985 season and UMass Lowell has won the last four meetings between the teams. Last time the River Hawks and Big Green met, UMass Lowell claimed a 14-2 victory at LeLacheur Park on April 5, 2022.
 
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
It has been a difficult start to the 2023 campaign for Dartmouth who hold a 1-18 overall record and 0-5 mark in conference play. The Big Green have 11 straight games with their last win coming against USF on March 14, a 6-1 road victory. Tyler Cox leads the team hitting .397 on the season with 10 runs, 25 hits and 30 total bases. Five other players have double digit hits this season. As a unit, Dartmouth is hitting .226 through 19 games with seven home runs. Clark Gilmore has the lone win on the mound and has a 1-1 record in four appearances. Jack Metzger leads the pitching group with 29 strikeouts while Trystan Sarcone has 21 on the year.

SERIES HISTORY
The River Hawks and Bulldogs meet as conference foes for the first time in program history. UMass Lowell holds a 30-15 record against Bryant, dating back to 1993. Last time the teams met, the River Hawks plated a DI program record 29 runs in a dominant victory on the road on April 19, 2022. Bryant had won four straight contests before UMass Lowell took the last two meetings.
 
LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
UMass Lowell enters the week after going 1-4 last week. The River Hawks picked up a midweek win over Stonehill before being swept by Maine at the weekend. With an 0-6 record in conference play, UMass Lowell will look to pick up important league wins against Bryant in the weekend series.  
 
Jacob Humphrey leads the way batting .322 on the season. The sophomore has tallied team-highs in total bases (43), hits (29), runs (19) and stolen bases (8). Alex Luccini is hitting .304 this year with hits in nine of the last 10 games. Luccini has 10 runs, 17 hits and eight RBIs through 21 appearances this year. Gerry Siracusa and Fritz Genther have eclipsed 20 hits, with 28 and 21, respectively. The two have combined for 25 runs and 23 total bases.
 
Matt Draper has a 1-4 record with an ERA of 5.18 in seven appearances and leads the team with 32 strikeouts on the year. Nick DiRito has an ERA of 8.37 and a 1-2 record. The rookie is third on the team with 14 strikeouts, behind only Draper and LJ Keevan, who has 16 on the year. Jacob Jette has earned his way into a weekend starting spot with a 1-2 record and 12 strikeouts in 15.2 innings.
 
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Bryant has a 12-11 overall record and a 4-2 conference mark. The Bulldogs swept NJIT earlier this season before dropping the series at Binghamton 2-1 over the weekend. Bryant also fell to Merrimack in a midweek matchup, finishing the week 1-3. Earlier this season, they knocked off #14 Virginia Tech in the opening game of a three-game series before falling in the next two games. They have scored 146 runs in 23 games with a team batting average of .251 and a slugging percentage of .434 with 29 home runs. Gavin Noriega leads the team with 21 hits while John Hosmer has a team-high six homeruns. Jake Gustin has scored a team-leading 30 runs. Coleman Picard leads the pitchers with 30 strikeouts while four other pitchers have recorded at least 20 punchouts on the year.
 
STOLEN GOODS
The River Hawks are 28-36 on stolen base attempts through 24 games this season. Jacob Humphrey is 8-10 this season while Gerry Siracusa is a perfect 4-4. Robert Gallagher has six stolen bags on seven attempts while Fritz Genther is 5-6. Base running was a huge help for the River Hawks last season, and they will look to continue that trend with last season's speed guys like Humphrey, Genther and Gallagher.
 
EXTRA BASES
Through 24 games, the River Hawks have hit 29 doubles, with Gerry Siracusa and Ryan Proto leading the way with six each. Fritz Genther has four doubles and four homeruns, while Jacob Humphrey has hit three homers, three doubles and one triple. UMass Lowell has hit 13 homeruns this season and Fritz Genther has a team-high four, including a grand slam.
 
CONFERENCE RANKS
Jacob Humphrey sits eighth in the league in hits (28), eighth in runs scored (19) and fourth in stolen bases (8). Humphrey and Frank Wayman are tied for fourth in the conference with one triple each. Fritz Genther's four homeruns have him sitting tenth and he sits tenth in RBIs with 17. Gerry Siracusa is tenth in hits with 28 and tenth in doubles with six. Siracusa also leads the league with 98 at bats.
 
Matt Draper is ninth in the league with a 5.18 ERA, ninth in opposing batting average at .271, fifth in strikeouts with 32 and first in innings pitched at 41.2. Joshua Becker is tied for fifth with one save this season. In the field, Gerry Siracusa is tied for in fielding percentage at 1.000. Conor Kelly is seventh in putouts with 142 while Jacob Humphrey and Fritz Genther are third and fourth in assists, with 53 and 52, respectively.
