Box Score
LOWELL, Mass. – Junior
Morgan Fisher (Glassboro, N.J.) finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while senior
Cayla Tulley (Corona, Calif.) tallied three RBI and a home run, as the UMass Lowell softball team (19-25-1, 7-10 AE) earned a 6-2 series-clinching, Senior Day victory against UAlbany (18-18, 8-7 AE) on Saturday afternoon at River View Field.
"Today was a great day," said Head Coach Jen Starek. "We got to celebrate some incredible student-athletes who have been a big force behind this program's success. We played River Hawk softball today and set the tone going into the tournament."
All but one senior and graduate student starter collected a hit on their special day, as the River Hawks' lineup finished with nine total. Senior
Ryley White (Wareham, Mass.) tossed a complete game, allowing just two runs and striking out five in her final home start.
White shut down the Great Danes' lineup in the top half of the first, fanning the final batter to bring up the River Hawks. In that bottom frame, the River Hawks caught fire, scoring twice on a Fisher RBI single to right field and a Tulley fielder's choice grounder to take the early lead.
As
Ryley White continued her dominance from the circle, the River Hawks showcased their power once again in the third. Fisher ripped a double off the center field wall to lead it off, before Tulley got a hold of one and sent a two-run homer over the right center field fence to make it 4-0.
The Great Danes gained a run in the fourth inning, when Morgan Petty reached on a fielder's choice, eventually scoring when Fisher threw down to catch a runner stealing. However, in the bottom of the fourth, Fisher came to the plate and launched a home run off the scoreboard for her third hit and RBI of the game, making it 6-1, before UAlbany picked up one more run in the top half of the fifth to cut the deficit to four once again.
White remained commanding from the circle for the River Hawks in both the sixth and seventh innings, limiting UAlbany's chances of a comeback. She gave up a leadoff hit in the sixth, but battled back and got the next three batters to hit into a fielder's choice, foul out to first base and strike out swinging, respectively, to end the inning. The seventh was very similar, as the Great Danes tallied another leadoff single, but White secured the 6-2 victory with a fielder's choice, line out to the first baseman and her fifth strikeout.
Now that home games for the River Hawks are no longer, they will travel to UMBC for a three game series on Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6, marking their final series of the season before the America East Conference tournament.
