BRIGHTON, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (12-26, 5-10 AE) fell to the #11 Boston College Eagles (28-12, 12-9 ACC) by a score of 9-3 on Wednesday night.
Â
"A lot of guys got opportunities tonight," said head coach Ken Harring. "Miles Cota was really good again. We were done in by the free passes we issued and lack of timely hitting."
Â
Junior Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) and sophomore Jacob Humphrey (Standish, Maine) each had two hits in the loss. Genther added two RBIs and one run. Graduate student Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and redshirt freshman Spencer Aubin (Dover, N.H.) each scored a run.
Â
Senior Miles Cota (Hampstead, NC) got the start and threw a scoreless first frame. Graduate student Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla.) went 1.0 inning and struck out two while sophomore Hayden Duke (Mattapoisett, Mass.) went 0.1 inning and fell to 0-1 on the season with one strikeout. Graduate student Shane Bogli (Vernon, Conn.) and freshman Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.) each recorded one strikeout.
Â
Miles Cota got out of an early jam with runners on the corners. Ryan Proto threw out a runner at second for the final out of the first inning to keep the game scoreless. Zach Rodgers entered the game after the River Hawks went down in order in the top of the second. The graduate student struck out two in a 1-2-3 inning.
Â
The Eagles hit three straight singles in the bottom of the third to load the bases before a double to left field brought in three runs. Boston College added a fourth run to extend the lead after three. A two-run homerun in the fourth made it 6-0 Eagles.
Â
Fritz Genther hit a leadoff double in the top of the fifth and came in to score on a groundout, getting the River Hawks on the board. The Eagles answered with two in the bottom half to take an 8-1 lead. The UMass Lowell offense put two runners on the sixth, but both were left stranded.
Â
Boston College added a run on a walk in the bottom of the seventh, but a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded ended the frame with the River Hawks trailing by eight. Frtiz Genther singled through the right side to bring in Spencer Aubin and Robert Gallagher to cut the lead to 9-3. Sophomore Alex Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) drew a walk to put two on with one out before senior Frank Wayman (Horseheads, N.Y.) drew a walk to load the bases.  Back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning and left three River Hawks stranded.
Â
UMass Lowell couldn't find a way back in the game late and fell in the midweek matchup. The River Hawks return to action Friday against Maine at LeLacheur Park.
