River Hawks Fall to UAlbany, 19-13

Story Links

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) tallied a team-high five points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (5-6, 0-3 AE) fell to the UAlbany Great Danes (6-5, 2-0 AE), 19-13, at Cushing Field on Saturday afternoon.

"They were dominant on the draw circle," said head coach Lisa Miller. "I thought we played well on defense considering the massive possession differential. We competed hard defensively; we competed hard on attack. Overall, just pleased with the kids fight."

While Catlin totaled three goals and two assists, senior Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) posted a team-high four goals to tie her season-high. Also chipping in with goals were senior Grace Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Audra Hansen (Stamford, Conn.), each finishing with three goals. Senior Caroline Klim (Wrentham, Mass.) led the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while senior Julia Napolitano (Oakdale, N.Y.) was all over the box score with three ground balls, two draw controls, and a caused turnover. In net, the primary goaltender, freshman Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.), made four saves.

The River Hawks' defense tested early as the Great Danes dominated possession and kept the ball on the offensive side of the field. Only 26 seconds in, UAlbany found the back of the net, jumping out to an early lead. Continuing to attack, the Great Danes added three more goals in under five minutes to take a 4-0 lead. UMass Lowell proceeded to lock down on defense, not allowing another goal for the remainder of the period. With 3:27 on the clock, Catlin fired a rocket past the goalkeeper to get the River Hawks on the board before adding one more minutes later, cutting the deficit to 4-2 after one quarter.

The two teams continued the defensive battle, as neither side tallied a goal for over three minutes of action. Although UAlbany struck first in the period to pull ahead 5-2, the River Hawks immediately retaliated, stringing together a pair of goals to cut the lead down to one with 7:36 on the clock. Following a goal by the Great Danes, Audra Hansen scored her first goal of the afternoon, but a 4-0 run by the visitors gave them a 10-5 lead heading into the break.

Although the Great Danes struck first in the third quarter, the River Hawks fired right back when sophomore Jenn McCarry (Ambler, Penn.) found an open Audra Hansen, who snuck her shot past the keeper for her second goal of the day. With 8:22 on the clock, the Great Danes scored on a free position shot, kickstarting a 5-1 run to own a 16-7 lead heading into the final period.

After UAlbany opened the fourth with a goal, the UMass Lowell offense erupted as Shaw, Catlin, and the Hansen sisters combined to score six straight goals in under eight minutes to pull the River Hawks within four with 3:25 on the clock. However, the comeback attempt was shutdown as the Great Danes tallied two goals in the final two minutes, sealing the 19-13 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks head to Nickerson Field in Boston for a non-conference matchup against Boston University on Wednesday, April 5, at 4 p.m.
