WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—The UMass Lowell track & field team capped its three-day stint at the 2023 Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary on Saturday afternoon.
"Overall, [it was] a good day. The men's sprint medley and the women's sprint medley looked good, especially for day two of competition," said Head Coach
Gary Gardner.
The women's sprint medley relay turned in an impressive sixth-place finish. Led off by junior
Madison Marsh (Dudley, Mass.), the relay team exploded on the track to earn the top-eight placement. Freshman
Danielle Thompson (Groton, Mass.) followed up on her stellar day one performance in the 400 meter with a solid 200-meter leg of the relay before graduate student
Tatum Pecci (Tewksbury, Mass.) took the baton. Anchoring the crew, freshman
Nia Mainer-Smith (Tauton, Mass.) finished strong to bring the team across the finish line in 4:17.23
Senior
Avery Leydon (Woburn, Mass.) tackled the women's 800-meter invitational in her season debut. Clocking in at 2:16.14, Leydon's tenth-place finish sets her up for a promising outdoor campaign.
"Avery ran in a downpour in the 800 meter, bust still had a good, solid race," added Gardner.
The men's team saw similar success in the sprint medley relay with both squads picking up top-10 times. The River Hawks' 'A' team comprised of senior
Hunter Marino (Weymouth, Mass.), senior
Thomas Jordan (Needham, Mass.), graduate student
Joseph Gaudreau (Wilmington, Mass.) and graduate student
Christopher McCauliff (Lunenburg, Mass.) led the way with a third-place finish. Anchored by McCauliff, the A-squad logged a final time of 3:29.68.
An all-rookie squad, UMass Lowell's B-team impressed with a seventh-place finish down in Williamsburg. Led off by
Tristan O'Riorden,
Eythan Luxene (Brockton, Mass.),
Derek Munroe (Tewksbury, Mass.) and
Basit Iddriss (Milford, Mass.) put the foot on the gas and crossed the finish line in 3:33.29 for a top-eight time.
Wrapping up the day on the track, graduate student
Daniel Cosgrove made his outdoor debut in the men's 800 meter. Picking up right where he left off, Cosgrove stopped the clock at 1:54.13 to finish 10th overall.
"[Daniel] Cosgrove did a great job in his event," commented Gardner. "He had a competitor fall in front of him early, but he fought back to run well."
Despite windy and rainy conditions, the men's fielders made their way to the throwing circle for the men's discus and shot put. Sophomore
Ian Camerato (Mount Laurel, N.J.) tossed to a 39.89m (130'8") mark for ninth place in the discus, while junior
Luis Cadime (Lowell, Mass.) picked up a sixth-place finish thanks to his 14.78m lob in the shot put.
The River Hawks stay close to home next Thursday, April 6, as they make the quick trip to North Andover, Mass., for the 2023 Merrimack College Invitational.
