BATON ROUGE, La. – The UMass Lowell softball team (6-9-1) continued their winning ways on Wednesday evening, defeating Southern University (3-16), 9-0, in both games of their doubleheader to earn the sweep.

The River Hawks performed well in all facets of the game during this two game set, tallying 23 hits offensively and not allowing one run. Junior Morgan Fisher (Glassboro, N.J.) was a large part of the offensive success, finishing a combined 5-for-6 with two runs scored and four RBI. Senior Cayla Tulley (Corona, Calif.) picked up right where she left off after a successful doubleheader just a day prior, going a combined 5-for-7 with two runs scored and four RBI.

Graduate student Mya Case (Syracuse, N.Y.) and junior Ellie Frederick (Sunapee, N.H.) also contributed at the plate for the River Hawks. Case finished 1-for-4 with her second home run of the season and four total runs scored while Frederick put up three hits and three RBI in game one before adding one hit and two runs scored in game two.

Freshman pitcher Giana LaCedra (Tyngsboro, Mass.) got the shutout, complete-game victory for the River Hawks in game one, while graduate student Kaylie See (Chino, Calif.) matched her in game two. LaCedra allowed just two hits with four strikeouts as See concluded game two with a one-hitter and eight strikeouts.

"Morga Fisher has been outstanding lately, fueling the offense," said Head Coach Jen Starek. "This trip was great because the offense came from the whole lineup. We got great pitching from Ryley all week and saw good contributions from the rest of the staff."

The River Hawks scored in five of six innings in game one, as the second inning was the only blank scoresheet for the team. The bats came alive in the third, as Mya Case led the inning off with a solo shot over the left field fence, before freshman Katelyn Fitzgerald (Ambler, Pa.) and Frederick RBI singles to take the 4-0 lead. They went on to score in each of the remaining innings, scoring one in the fourth and two in both the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore Emily Tow (North Kingstown, R.I.) added to the fun with an RBI single, while Tulley smacked a two-run single in the fifth and Frederick continued her outstanding game with a two-run home run to help give the River Hawks the 9-0 victory.

Game two was similar, as the squad plated nine runs, including three in the first and last innings. Tulley and Fitzgerald each picked up another RBI in the first, as sophomore Brooke Ashenfelter (Stewartstown, Pa.) earned an RBI base knock in the sixth, along with a Fisher two-run single. Fisher also gathered a RBI in the third and fifth inning, while Tulley joined her in the fifth with an RBI single up the middle.

LaCedra and See kept the Lady Jaguars' bats quiet throughout each game while the River Hawks' defense had their backs, making zero errors throughout the series. With the addition of run support, the team was able to earn the doubleheader sweep.

The River Hawks will now travel back to Lowell for their home opener on Wednesday, March 15, which will be a doubleheader against Stonehill, starting at 1 p.m.
