DELAND, FL. – Sophomore Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) tallied a team-high four goals as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (5-2) took down Stetson (2-3), 16-13 on Sunday afternoon.

"This is a grueling stretch for the kids with eight games in 25 days," said head coach Lisa Miller. "We are finding ways to win and get a little better/smarter with every competition. I'm looking forward to seeing how we compete against a very good team on Wednesday."

Catlin also added two assists to lead the squad with six points. Behind her, junior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) totaled three goals and two assists. Also collecting hat tricks in the game were senior Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Macy Shultz (Adams, N.Y.), each finding the back of the net three times. Senior Julia Napolitano (Oakdale, N.Y.) paced the River Hawks with eight draw controls while adding three ground balls collected. In net, freshman Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.) made six saves.

UMass Lowell dominated possession early in the game, outshooting the Hatters 3-0 in the opening minutes. The Hatters' defense stayed strong, but after six minutes of scoreless play, the River Hawks struck first as Shaw fired one past the keeper. Moments later, freshman Audra Hansen (Stamford, Conn.) tallied a goal for the fourth straight game, putting her team up 2-0. With 3:54 on the clock, Shultz capitalized on a free position shot to give her team a three-goal advantage. Meanwhile, the UMass Lowell defense stayed flawless, keeping the opponents off the board in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, the River Hawks' offense erupted for five goals, kicked off by Shultz as she snuck a shot past the goaltender only 26 seconds in. Although the Hatters responded to cut the margin to 4-1, the River Hawks retaliated with two quick goals from Brockbank and Catlin, growing their lead to five. Stetson added two more to their total prior to the half, but Catlin and senior Abby McLaughlin (Walpole, Mass.) matched the hosts, giving UMass Lowell an 8-3 lead at the half.

Out of the break, the River Hawks' offense picked up right where it left off, with Shultz and Brockbank tallying back-to-back scores, putting UMass Lowell up 10-3 with 10:04 on the clock. The back and forth battle continued through the period, with the Hatters holding a 3-2 edge to pull within six heading into the final quarter.

Looking to battle back, Stetson went on a 3-1 run in the first four minutes of the quarter, cutting the UMass Lowell advantage down to 13-9. The River Hawks, however, took the momentum away from the Hatters with goals from Catlin and Audra Hansen. In the final six minutes, the Hatters put together a 4-1 stretch as they tried to comeback, but UMass Lowell fended off any last minute attempts, securing the 16-13 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks continue their trip down south as they take on Jacksonville on Wednesday, March 8, at 7 p.m.
