River Hawks Fall at #22 Jacksonville, 16-4

JACKSONVILLE, FL. – Junior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) recorded two goals as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (5-3) fell to the #22 Jacksonville Dolphins (3-3), 16-4, at Rock Stadium on Wednesday night.

"Jacksonville was a great team," said head coach Lisa Miller. "They're aggressive, fast, shot the ball hard and hustle all over the field. We competed hard for three quarters, but unfortunately we let one of the quarters get our of hand and the final score is a reflection of that. Still progress, as we started well against a top 25 opponent and we gathered ourselves and played competitively after halftime. It's a good learning experience for us to take into conference play."

Tied with Brockbank, sophomore Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) chipped in with two goals of her own. On the draw, junior Emerson Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.) led the squad with four draw control victories, while Catlin and senior Julia Napolitano (Oakdale, N.Y.) each tallied three. Defensively, senior Caroline Klim (Wrentham, Mass.), sophomore Daia Hansford (Bowie, Md.), and junior Kiley McCarthy (North Reading, Mass.) each caused a turnover. In net, freshman Hannah Shaddock (Corning, N.Y.) made six saves.

The Dolphins jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first goal of the game less than three minutes into the game. Moments later, however, the River Hawks struck back when Catlin bolted past a defender and snuck a shot past the keeper, knotting the game up at 1-1 with 8:26 on the clock. The two teams proceeded to lock down on defense, with neither side finding the back of the net for nearly six minutes. With 2:41 remaining in the first, Jacksonville ended the scoreless stretch before adding one more to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Dolphins struck first again, this time on a free position shot less than a minute into the period. Although the River Hawk defense made several key stops, Jacksonville continued their scoring streak, tallying eight goals to own an 11-1 lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, UMass Lowell played lockdown defense, allowing only two goals in the quarter. After the Dolphins fired a strike to extend their lead to eleven, the River Hawks offense started to control the time of possession and continued to find good looks. However, they were unable to fire any shots behind the keeper, and the Dolphins added one more at the buzzer to own a 13-1 lead heading into the fourth.

After a goal by the Dolphins extended the lead, the River Hawks found their rhythm on offense, putting together a three-goal scoring stretch, highlighted by back-to-back goals from Brockbank with 4:12 on the clock. However, Jacksonville fended off the visitors' attacks, adding two more goals to seal the 16-4 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks open conference play when they welcome New Hampshire to Cushing Field on Saturday, March 18, at 1 p.m.
