3/24/2023 5:51:00 PM

CORALVILLE, Iowa—UMass Lowell hockey defenseman Marek Korenčik (Zilina, Slovakia) becomes the fourth River Hawk to sign on with a professional team after inking an amateur tryout (ATO) with the Iowa Heartlanders, as announced by the team Friday afternoon.

"Marek established himself as a hard defender in Hockey East and a top-four defenseman in his later years here. He saved his best for last contributing on both ends of the ice. His enthusiasm for the game will be missed. He also ranked high in several categories on our defensive core," commented Head Coach Norm Bazin. "He too has excelled in the classroom getting his bachelor's and master's degrees in four years. He transitioned very well for someone who came directly from Slovakia to make an impact in college hockey."

Korenčik was a frequent flyer on the River Hawks' blueline during his four seasons in the Mill City. An energetic defenseman, the senior stepped up his two-way game to post career highs in assists (5) and points (8) this season. Korenčik logged 22 blocks this year to finish just shy of his career-high 26 set during his freshman campaign. One of six River Hawks to surpass 100 games played this year, Korenčik caps his career at UMass Lowell with eight goals and 12 assists in his 115 games.

A dedicated student in the classroom, Korenčik was a three-time Hockey East All-Academic Team honoree during his career. He was also one of six River Hawks tabbed a 2021-22 ACHA All-Academic Scholar.
