River Hawks Face 13-8 Setback Against Quinnipiac

Story Links

LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore Jade Catlin (Middletown, Md.) tallied a game-high four points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (4-2) fell to the Quinnipiac Bobcats (2-2), 13-8, on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Molly Shaw (Marshfield, Mass.) recorded her third hat trick of the season to lead the team in goals. Behind her, Catlin had two goals and two assists, while freshman Audra Hansen (Stamford, Ct.) chipped in two goals. Rounding out the scorers for UMass Lowell was freshman Grace Lydon (Rowley, Mass.), who tallied the second goal of her career.

"I thought we were a little bit flat," said head coach Lisa Miller. "We weren't quite ready to play and didn't stay in the gameplan. That style of defense is something that we need to keep working on. We had opportunities, especially early, but we just didn't finish on our shots. In that type of game, we just need to be able to finish."

The River Hawks opened the game strong, outshooting the Bobcats 3-0 in under two minutes of play. However, Quinnipiac got on the board first, using a woman-up advantage to take a 1-0 lead with 11:33 on the clock. Three minutes later, the River Hawks retaliated as Catlin slipped through three defenders and drilled a shot into the back of the net to get the hosts on the board. Audra Hansen quickly followed up with a goal, giving the River Hawks their first lead of the match. Quinnipiac fired right back, knotting the game up at 2-2, before adding one more to own a 3-2 advantage after one period.

With momentum on their side, the Bobcats continued to attack on offense, tallying two goals early in the second quarter to hold a 5-2 lead. The two teams went back and forth for nearly four minutes, but neither side broke the scoreless drought until Shaw fired a strike with 8:34 to play. In the final six minutes of the half, Audra Hansen and Shaw each tallied their second goal, but the Bobcats matched with two goals, giving the visitors an 8-5 lead at the break.

Quinnipiac quickly opened the second half with two goals, but the River Hawks struck right back, as Catlin tallied her second goal of the game, pulling the hosts within three. The two squads proceeded to lock down on defense, as neither side could get on the board for nearly five minutes. The River Hawks finally ended the scoreless drought when junior Megan Brockbank (Bayport, N.Y.) dished the ball out to Shaw, who snuck a shot past the keeper to cut the lead down to 9-7. However, the Bobcats added one more in the final seconds, extending the lead to three.

After Quinnipiac added one more, Lydon fired a shot into the top right corner of the net with 12:38 remaining. UMass Lowell continued to battle, but the visitors added two more to seal the 13-8 final.

Next up, the River Hawks will fly south to DeLand, Florida and take on Stetson University on Sunday, March 5 at 12 p.m.
