Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 19/20 River Hawks Blanked, 2-0, by No. 17/16 Merrimack

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.—The No. 19/20 UMass Lowell men's hockey team (16-13-3, 10-9-3 Hockey East) suffered a 2-0 setback at the hands of No. 17/16 Merrimack (20-12-1, 15-8-0 HEA) Saturday night at Lawler Rink.

Though the River Hawks were held scoreless, 15 skaters took their crack at the net with graduate student Filip Fornåå Svensson (Linköping, Sweden) leading the way with six shots on goal. Behind the forward, senior Carl Berglund (Hammaro, Sweden), sophomore Matt Crasa (South Setauket, N.Y.) and freshman Dillan Bentley (Peoria, Ill.) combined for 12 shots on goal with four each.

On defense, freshman Mitchell Becker (Rogers, Minn.), junior Brehdan Engum (Burnsville, Minn.) and senior Marek Korencik (Zilina, Slovakia) finished the night with a block apiece. Graduate student Gustavs Davis Grigals (Riga, Latvia) saw most of the action between the pipes, making 14 saves after getting the nod in the first period. In his 44 minutes on the ice, Grigals successfully shut down both Merrimack power plays to help the penalty kill unit stay untouched.

The Warriors skated out to a 2-0 lead minutes into the opening frame off goals from Alex Jefferies and Ottoville Leppanen, forcing the River Hawks to chase the deficit from the jump. UMass Lowell looked to spark a comeback with an overwhelming flurry of shots on Merrimack's Hugo Ollas but came up fruitless to cap the first.

Eager to chip away at the lead, UMass Lowell aggressively returned to the ice with fresh legs and barreled into the offensive zone. Freshman Owen Fowler (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Bentley relentlessly pestered Merrimack in the neutral zone hoping to generate on the odd man rush, but another scoreless twenty minutes kept the River Hawks at a two-goal distance.

A strong third-period defensive stand for the River Hawks held the Warriors off as the River Hawks searched for an offensive spark. Fornåå Svensson came close on a few shots off the doorstep, only to just barely miss the open slot. Though UMass Lowell ended the night with a staggering 36-17 shot on goal differential, the River Hawks came up short in the conference matchup to fall 2-0.

UMass Lowell closes out the regular series with a home-and-home against Northeastern next weekend, March 3-4. The team will celebrate its graduating class on Friday, March 3, on home ice with a pre-game Senior Night ceremony.
