SERIES HISTORY
UMass Lowell and Florida Gulf Coast have never met before this weekend's series.
LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks enter the weekend series after going 0-3 on opening weekend at #23 South Carolina last week. Graduate student
Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, N.J.) led the team with three hits on the weekend, with two doubles and two RBIs. Seniors
Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) and
Trey Brown (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore
Brandon Fish (Londonderry, N.H.) each tallied two hits. Brown and Proto combined for three RBIs over the weekend. UMass Lowell will look to pick up its first win of the season against FGCU.
SCOUTING THE GULLS
Florida Gulf Coast is off to a 4-1 start to the new campaign. After completing a four-game sweep over Hofstra, the Eagles fell to Indiana State for their first loss of the season. Joe Kinker leads the team hitting .550 in 20 at-bats with seven runs, 11 hits, five doubles and seven RBIs. The Eagles have scored 44 runs in five games while allowing 21 in that stretch. The Eagles are a solid hitting team, but also a good running team as they are 6-7 on stolen base attempts this season. Four pitchers have 1-0 records with Jason Woodward and Nick Love leading the way. Woodward struck out five in 6.0 innings and allowed just two hits in his first appearance this year.
STOLEN GOODS
Sophomore
Jacob Humphrey (Standish, Maine) and graduate student
Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) picked up right where they left off last season with each picking up their first stolen bags of the year against South Carolina. The River Hawks will look for their speed to get runners in scoring position once again this season.
YOUNG GUNS
Opening weekend saw many young pitchers take the mound and several make their collegiate debut.
LJ Keevan, now in his sophomore season, got the start on opening day and is likely to be a weekend starter this season. Fellow sophomore
Hayden Duke (Mattapoisett, Mass.) also made his return to the mound after a solid rookie campaign. Freshmen
Brian Foley (Milton, Mass.),
Jacob Jette (Franklin, Mass.),
Nick DiRito (Plymouth, Mass.) and
Michael Simes (Rutland, Mass.) all made their first appearances for the River Hawks, with Foley earning the start in Saturday's contest.
DOUBLING UP
After leading the team with 16 doubles last season,
Gerry Siracusa has tallied two doubles in three games this season. Sophomore
Conor Kelly (Hopkinton, Mass.) and
Ryan Proto each recorded one double in the South Carolina series.
