VESTAL, N.Y. – Four players scored double figures as the UMass Lowell women's basketball team (3-21, 2-12 AE) defeated the Binghamton Bearcats (13-14, 6-8 AE) by a score of 62-55 on Saturday afternoon. The River Hawks snap a six-game losing skid.
"Everyone played a role in today's win. We had a bit of a slow start, but I am extremely proud of how we made adjustments, communicated with one another and were not going to be denied," said head coach
Denise King. "Our attention to detail and ability to execute got us the win today!"
Junior
Jaini Edmonds (Worcester, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points and sophomore
Ivory Finley (Minneapolis, Minn.) added 14 points, five rebounds and four steals. Sophomore
Amaya Dowdy (Woonsocket, R.I.) and senior
Jaliena Sanchez (Springfield, Mass.) each hit double figures, with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Binghamton opened the game on a 6-0 run, but
Ivory Finley knocked down back-to-back threes to keep the River Hawks within one possession. The first quarter was low scoring with both teams combining for 20 points. UMass Lowell shot 20% in the opening frame, but only trailed by two after 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Bearcats went on another 6-0 run to open the frame and extend the lead before Finley and Edmonds combined to cut the lead. Binghamton's offense found its stride in the second and maintained a nine-point edge until
Jaini Edmonds' crafty layup cut the lead to four at the media timeout. Out of the break, graduate student
Mili Carrera (Lima, Peru) and
Amaya Dowdy scored on consecutive possessions to tie the game before another mid-range jumper from Dowdy gave UMass Lowell its first lead of the day. Finley hit another triple late to give the River Hawks a five-point lead at the half. UMass Lowell shot 67% from the field in the second quarter.
UMass Lowell carried its momentum into the third quarter as
Jaini Edmonds scored on the team's first possession of the half. Binghamton responded with a few makes of their own as the teams began to exchange buckets in the middle of the third quarter.
Jaliena Sanchez hit a jumper just before the media break to push the River Hawks' lead to seven before hitting another jumper out of the break to stretch the lead again. A 6-0 run from Binghamton broke up the scoring run for UMass Lowell, but
Amaya Dowdy's layup with seconds remaining gave the visitors a seven-point lead heading into the final frame.
The River Hawks have been on the losing end of several close games this season, but the team was determined to break that streak on Saturday.
Amaya Dowdy hit five straight shots to fend off the Binghamton push in the fourth.
Mili Carrera's layup and
Jaini Edmonds' free throws gave the River Hawks an 11-point lead, their largest of the game, late in the quarter. The Bearcats managed to cut the lead to six with 41 seconds to play, but UMass Lowell hit free throws down the stretch to secure the 62-55 win and keep their postseason hopes alive.
Two games remain in the regular season for UMass Lowell and the River Hawks return home to take on UMBC in the regular season home finale. Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22 at the Costello Athletic Center.
