Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 18/19 River Hawks Fall 3-2 to Providence in Overtime

PROVIDENCE—After a hard-fought 60 minutes, the No. 18/19 UMass Lowell men's hockey team (15-11-3, 9-7-3 Hockey East) dropped a 3-2 decision to Providence (14-10-8, 8-6-6 HEA) on the road Friday night at Schneider Arena.

Freshman Nick Rhéaume (Trois-Rivieres, Quebec) and graduate student Filip Fornåå Svensson (Linköping, Sweden) found their way onto the score sheet with a goal each. Graduate student Jon McDonald (Livonia, Mich.) led the way in points with two off a pair of helpers. Seniors Carl Berglund (Hammaro, Sweden) and Ryan Brushett (Montreal, Quebec) rounded out the night with one assist to their credit. Defensively, junior Ben Meehan (Walpole, Mass.) matched his career high in blocks with four against the Friars. Meehan set the single-game best earlier this season on the road against Northeastern.

Junior Henry Welsch (Lakeville, Minn.) earned the nod in net, making 26 saves on the night.

An evenly matched first period kept both squads in a deadlock after 15. Providence controlled time in the offensive zone, but efficient bursts on attack let the River Hawks take a slight 13-10 edge in shots on goal. Both teams earned a pair of power plays, but a goaltending showdown between Welsch and Providence's Philip Svedebäck kept a clean sheet at the first intermission.

The River Hawks returned the ice with a newfound intensity that kept them high in the zone throughout the second. Outshooting the Friars 9-6, UMass Lowell put pressure on Svedebäck with an unrelenting forecheck and prevented the home squad from settling the play. The Friars nearly stole the lead midway through the frame with a two-on-one chance, but freshman Owen Fowler (Tewksbury, Mass.) broke up the play with a stretching poke check.

Welsch's sharp reflexes between the pipe fended off several near goals from the Friars, but eventually, Providence caught the junior off-guard to take a 1-0 lead with 2:13 left in the middle block. The Friars' lead ended just 25 seconds later, however, with a greasy goal off the stick of Rhéaume. Berglund, stuck in a battle on the boards, poked the puck out to a nearby McDonald for the quick redirect to Rhéaume. Sweeping behind the net, Rhéaume reached his stick out and around to tuck the puck under Svedebäck's right pad for the equalizer heading into the third.

The third marked a thrilling chase for possession as both sides fired off shot after shot in hopes of claiming the lead. With 2:24 left on the clock, Providence seemingly stymied the River Hawks' energy with a late power play goal from Parker Ford. Switching roles, Providence went on the kill in the final minutes, allowing UMass Lowell to capitalize and pull Welsch for the extra man. With 55 seconds on the clock, Brushett fired a shot from the nearside dot that bounced off Svedebäck's chest. In perfect position, Fornåå Svensson tapped in the loose puck to force bonus hockey and keep UMass Lowell's hopes alive.

Though the River Hawks took several chances on net, the Friars ultimately came out on top. With just 1:21 left in the overtime frame, Providence dealt the 3-2 loss to the River Hawks to take the first of the weekend.

UMass Lowell hopes to level the series on home ice on Saturday, Feb. 18. Puck drop for the ESPN+ broadcast is slated for 6:05 p.m.
