CONWAY, S.C. – Junior
Elizabeth Frederick (Sunapee, N.H.) totaled two hits, as the UMass Lowell softball team (0-4) dropped a twin bill to wrap up action at Coastal Carolina on Friday.
The River Hawks fell, 9-2, in game one before facing a closely-contested, 1-0 setback in game two.
Frederick recorded one hit in each contest with a RBI in the first outing of the day, as well, to lead the River Hawks. Senior
Cayla Tulley (Corona, Calif.) registered one hit, one RBI and one run scored to add to the offense. Graduate student
Emily Reid (Dighton, Mass.) took the game one decision in the circle, while senior
Kaylie See (Chino, Calif.) recorded the decision in game two with four innings of work.
The Chants went three-up and three-down in Reid's first inning in the circle as a River Hawk, but would load the bases in the second before Keirstin Roose drove a base-clearing double to give her squad an early lead. She was then knocked home on the next play thanks to a ball off the wall by Diamond Williams to extend the lead to 4-0.
The home team added to the margin in the third with a three-run homer by Maddie Jennings. However, UMass Lowell responded in their next trip to the dish when Tulley drove a ball up the middle to score graduate student
Mya Case (Syracuse, N.Y.) before legging out a run of her own on a base hit to left center by Frederick, closing the gap to 7-2.
Coastal Carolina was able to get the two runs back in the sixth, though, on a long two-bagger by Iyanla De Jesus for the 9-2 outcome.
In game two, See stranded a pair of Chants runners in the first to keep the game scoreless. Back-to-back singles in the top of the second from junior
Morgan Fisher (Glassboro, N.J.) and Frederick put River Hawks on the corners, but the 0-0 stalemate would remain intact until the bottom of the inning when Jennings led off with a solo shot over the fence in left center.
The defense commanded the rest of the game, as the teams combined to leave four runners on base. The River Hawks threatened to erase the difference in the sixth, when graduate student
Tori Mueller (Clovis, Calif.) drew a walk and advanced all the way to third, but the visitors were unable to capitalize.
Up next, UMass Lowell continues tournament play at the Hampton/Norfolk State Invitational on February 17-19.
