11/5/2023 12:00:00 PM

The new-look UMass Lowell women’s basketball team is ready to get the 2023-24 season started on Monday night at Boston University. Head Coach Denise King enters her third season at the helm, looking to lead the River Hawks to another postseason appearance and challenge for the conference title.

The River Hawks are returning six players from last season’s roster with Mili Carrera, Sydney Coombs, Tasha Lima and Ella Ner all back for another season. Baylee Teal and Leilani Rodriguez return from injury to bolster the squad.

Five freshmen and three transfer students make up the group of newcomers to Lowell this season as the River Hawks build their 14-player roster. The freshman class includes four guards, Rayne Durant, Abbey Lindsey, Maddie Rice, Gabby Ross and Cire Worley, who are all eager to make their mark early in their careers.

King added three transfer students to bring a veteran presence and high-level experience to work alongside a talented young class of first-year players. Sophie Baydanov (Morehead State), Alex Gitchenko (Georgia State) and Sydney Watkins (Miami-OH) will provide leadership and experience to the group in the new campaign.

The coaching staff welcomed the addition of Jonathan Parsons in October. Parsons joins the River Hawks after spending nine seasons with the Bryant Bulldogs and brings years of experienced coaching and recruiting to the staff.

The River Hawks open the season with eight of the first nine games on the road. The season begins with a three-game road trip against Boston University (Nov. 7), Rhode Island (Nov. 10) and Holy Cross (Nov. 13) before the home opener against Le Moyne (Nov. 18).

A five-game road trip follows with visits to Central Connecticut, Fordham, Boston College, Brown and before closing things out with a Kennedy Cup game against Massachusetts (Dec. 10). The River Hawks begin a five-game homestand when they host Dartmouth, Harvard and Colgate to close out the calendar year.

Conference play begins with two games in three days with Maine (Jan. 4) and New Hampshire (Jan. 6) visiting Lowell. The River Hawks then hit the road for a pair of games against NJIT and UMBC before returning home to take on UAlbany (Jan. 18) and Binghamton (Jan. 20).

UMass Lowell will go three on the road and three at home in the next six games, taking on Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire before hosting UMBC (Feb. 8), NJIT (Feb. 10) and Bryant (Feb.17). Three more road games at Binghamton, UAlbany and Bryant precede the regular season finale against Vermont (Mar. 2) at the Tsongas Center.
