Baseball Names 2024 Team Captains

LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell baseball head coach Nick Barese has announced the leadership group for the 2024 season.

Senior Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) and graduate student Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) have been selected as the team captains ahead of the new campaign.

"As a program, we are fortunate to have Ryan and Fritz as captains, they are great examples of what it means to be a part of the River Hawk baseball program. Ryan and Fritz both demonstrate excellent leadership, accountability, and act as positive ambassadors not just for our program, but UMass Lowell as an institution. I'm confident the direction of the club house and our dugout will excel under both players."

Proto enters his fifth season in the blue and white and has been a staple behind the plate for the River Hawks. The veteran has produced a .268 batting average with 88 runs, 131 hits, seven home runs, 33 doubles and 66 RBIs in his career while being named to the Buster Posey Watch List three years in a row. He has a career fielding percentage of .983 behind 862 putouts and 89 assists.

Genther enter his third season as a River Hawk and has been the trusted shortstop in his career. The senior has hit .305 in his time at UMass Lowell, totaling 89 runs, 123 hits, 28 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs and 91 RBIs while also stealing 26 bases. He has a career fielding percentage of .944 with 143 putouts and 243 assists.
